He’s still determined to bring Horizon: An American Saga to life and is actively working towards that goal. He’s also developing a new drama called Honeymoon with Harry, featuring the star of Road House.
Dan Fogelman, the writer of Paradise, is working with directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa on a new project, Honeymoon with Harry. The three previously collaborated on the popular film Crazy, Stupid, Love and Paradise. Fogelman recently announced at CCXP in Brazil that filming for Honeymoon with Harry is scheduled to begin in March 2026. The project, which the pair joined in August 2025, has been in development for some time.
The movie has been in development in Hollywood for more than two decades, but it’s finally gaining traction. While the actors signed on this summer, Amazon MGM Studios is the latest company to secure the rights and seems poised to actually bring the dramedy to life.
I heard from Dan Fogelman that the new movie, Honeymoon with Harry, has gone through a lot of changes. He said even before he got involved, they’d tried out about eighteen different actor pairings for the two leads! It’s amazing how much work goes into getting the right chemistry on screen.
I’ve worked with Jake Gyllenhaal, Kevin Costner, and my regular collaborators, John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, on many projects. They directed the first two episodes of Paradise this season, as well as the pilot for This Is Us, Paradise, and Crazy Stupid Love. They’ll be directing this new project with those same actors.
Fogelman confirmed, “We’re gonna start shooting in March.”
The creator of Paradise explained that the film is inspired by a book he first read over twenty years ago, much like when he initially tried to get the project off the ground. The book, Honeymoon with Harry by Bart Baker, wasn’t published when the project first began development in 2004, but was released in 2012.
Fogelman described the story as a novel by a talented author, Bart Baker, that he self-published. It centers around a troubled young man whose life is turned around when he meets a woman. However, her father immediately dislikes him, and a series of events leads to the unlikely situation of the father joining the couple on their honeymoon.
Fogelman explained that the show has a complex core idea, but he didn’t want to reveal too much. He described it as a drama focusing on the relationship between a father and son, and ultimately, a story about life itself.
The creator of This Is Us described his upcoming film, Honeymoon with Harry, as being in the vein of classics like Kramer vs. Kramer, Terms of Endearment, Jerry Maguire, and Almost Famous. He said it’s the type of movie he personally enjoys making, though opportunities are rare now. He envisions it as a film that’s both humorous and heartbreaking, ultimately hoping it will resonate with audiences, much like a classic James Brooks film from the 1970s.
He acknowledged the project had been stuck in development for a long time, explaining, “A project isn’t really happening until filming begins and the actors are on set. We’re further along than we’ve ever been with this one, and we’re actively making plans, so it’s very close to becoming a reality.”
