Kevin Bacon is having a devil of a good time with ‘The Bondsman’

Kevin Bacon certainly knows a thing or two about catching hell.

1984 saw me, Kevin Bacon, break into the limelight in “Footloose,” a film where I portrayed Ren, a defiant young man from Chicago. Fate led me to a tiny town, where I found myself at odds with an authoritative religious figure who enforced a ban on dancing and rock music.

In “The Bondsman,” currently available on Prime Video, Hub Halloran faces a unique predicament. Originally portrayed as a rough bounty hunter, he meets an untimely end during a failed mission, only to be mysteriously revived by none other than Satan himself. Now, his new task is to hunt down demons who have managed to escape from the depths of Hell.

Bacon is enjoying himself tremendously while portraying his character. The pilot script he received from horror producer Jason Blum, who served as an executive producer, was richly seasoned with plenty of grisly scenes, a dark sense of humor from the South, and strong language.

In a recent video call from New York, Bacon expressed, “Upon reading it, I immediately messaged him back with ‘I’m on board.’ The unique voice and style of the piece struck me as something fresh and uncommon.

Over his long, illustrious career in Hollywood, this esteemed actor has been part of a wide array of films – from iconic classics like “A Few Good Men,” “JFK,” and “Apollo 13” to cult hits such as “Wild Things,” comedies including “Diner” and “Crazy Stupid Love”, and horror movies such as “MaXXXine,” “Flatliners,” and the original “Friday the 13th.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to see that at 66 years old, Michael Bacon is showing no signs of slowing down. With the upcoming series “The Bondsman” and a plethora of future projects on the horizon, it’s clear he’s not letting age dictate his pace. Moreover, his Instagram account offers a delightful peek into his life, where his 4.5 million followers enjoy snippets of his witty banter, musical moments with his actress wife, Kyra Sedgwick, and other cherished family members.

A recent video clip captured Bacon and Sedgwick spending an evening out in Manhattan’s bustling Times Square. “Alright, so what are we doing here?” Sedgwick queries. To which Bacon responds, “Well, I often make it about myself. But tonight, we’re in Times Square, it’s a date night, and we’re heading to the theater. So, my dear, tonight, it’s all about you.” The camera subsequently focuses on a colossal advertisement for the play titled “The Bondsman.

For many years, his unyielding determination has consistently pushed him forward, reaching ever higher milestones. When queried about summarizing his career at this stage, Bacon hesitated slightly, admitting that he doesn’t do it frequently.

He mentioned, “I’m simply trying to advance step by step and carry on. If I’m not engaged in producing something or exercising my creativity, I find it challenging to figure out how to spend my time. I do it because I enjoy it and yearn for the chance to do even more. In essence, ‘The Bondsman’ is a new phase, another exciting project, and another opportunity to slip into the shoes of someone distinct from myself.

Furthermore, Hub stands out significantly. He’s not only grappling with the mystery of his pact with the devil, but also striving to mend his troubled relationship with his former wife, a rising country artist named Maryanne (Jennifer Nettles), and their teenage son Cade (Maxwell Jenkins). Simultaneously, Maryanne’s new partner Lucky (Damon Herriman) is plotting against him.

The character they call ‘Hub’ may be our protagonist, but he’s far from perfect – in fact, he’s made some grave errors and bears a heavy burden of guilt. Despite his flaws, it’s fascinating how calmly he handles all these bizarre events that would drive most people up the wall.

The character expands upon Bacon’s collection of seemingly virtuous roles that conceal underlying flaws. In his recent TV series, “City on a Hill” for Showtime, he played the part of FBI investigator Jackie Rohr, who appeared to be upholding the law, but in truth was tainted by corruption, drug abuse, and infidelity.

Michael Bacon noted that he rarely takes on roles of unambiguously virtuous characters. Instead, he identifies as a character actor rather than a leading man. The character Hub, in this case, may not be clearly good or evil. He hopes the audience finds him appealing. To truly appreciate the series, one must grasp Hub’s predicament; he grapples with inner struggles and external threats. The show is also about his journey towards redemption.

Beyond just playing a leading character in “The Bondsman”, Kevin Bacon has a multi-faceted involvement. He’s not only an executive producer but also collaborated with Jennifer Nettles, the lead singer from country music duo Sugarland, to write and record songs for the accompanying album, “Hell and Back”, which releases this Friday.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over Erik Oleson’s description of “The Bondsman” as an eccentric, humorous series that seamlessly blends family drama, country tunes, and Kevin Bacon wielding a chainsaw against demons. Frankly, it sounds like the perfect blend of genres! Plus, Kevin’s captivating charm makes it easy for us viewers to embrace his sometimes questionable decisions. Simply put, this show promises an unforgettable television experience!

Both Bacon and Oleson are hopeful that “The Bondsman” will continue past just one season. They deliberately crafted Season 1 with an ending intended to make it hard for Amazon to resist granting them additional opportunities to produce more episodes. In a sense, they were cunning and manipulative in their efforts to ensure the longevity of this series.

For now, Bacon has other projects in sight. One of them that has him thrilled is called “Family Movie,” which he and Sedgwick are working on together for their family to participate in. Their children, Travis and Sosie Bacon, are expected to join them in this project, where they will act alongside their parents who will also direct the comedy-horror film. He expressed his hope that they could start shooting it this coming spring.

Then there’s contributing to his social media footprint.

Initially, the concept of social media didn’t sit well with me. However, when it came to setting up SixDegrees.org, my nonprofit organization, I found myself reluctantly delving into it. Our slogan was, “Social media with a social conscience.” Later on, I understood that I had been creating short films for my loved ones and sharing them informally. I also produced several videos for my band, The Bacon Brothers, before social media existed. Essentially, I saw social media as another means of expressing myself artistically, much like performing live.

Despite claiming to enjoy producing the footage, he also acknowledged that it’s turned into a situation with both advantages and disadvantages for him. The content might seem improvised, but in reality, he meticulously plans, rehearses, and even films multiple takes. He usually has a specific vision and directs the process accordingly.

He’s torn about the reception to his posts: On one side, people genuinely appreciate them. But on the other, there are times when someone approaches him or both of them and says, “You know what your best work is?”, expecting it to be something like ‘Footloose’ or ‘Apollo 13’. Instead, they say, “Your Instagram.” This leaves him feeling surprised.

After a brief pause, he remarked, “It’s sad in a sense, but this is our reality. If that’s what appeals to people, then so be it. At this point, it’s already happened. Might as well accept and enjoy it.
