Kerry Washington Shocked and Emotional After Winning Best Actress at NAACP Image Awards 2025
Kerry Washington was deeply moved when she received the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture at the NAACP Image Awards.
On Saturday night, a gathering recognized some outstanding individuals, taking place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles, where many notable talents were celebrated.
However, it might be noted that among all, Kerry, aged 48, seemed particularly radiant, having been honored for her outstanding performance in Tyler Perry’s Netflix production titled “The Six Triple Eight.”
Or more casually:
But among them, Kerry, who’s 48, really stood out. She won an award for her fantastic role in the Netflix movie by Tyler Perry called “The Six Triple Eight.
The film presented an emotionally charged account of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a unique World War II armed force exclusively comprised of African-American women.
In a stellar lineup, Kerry stood out victorious against contenders such as Cynthia Erivo (for Wicked: Part One), Lupita Nyong’o (A Quiet Place: Day One), Regina King (Shirley) and Lashana Lynch (the biopic Bob Marley: One Love. )
Stepping onto the stage, Kerry expressed surprise at winning the award, given the remarkable women who were also nominated in her category.

With obvious enthusiasm, Kerry affectionately embraced Cynthia as they both headed towards the stage where Kerry would receive her award later that night.
Kerry expressed that during award ceremonies, it rarely seemed genuine to her when people appeared shocked; however, she admitted that Beyoncé’s reaction at the Grammys was an exception – it was truly astounding, she added, mimicking a dumbfounded expression.
Yet, I’m utterly astonished. The reason being, the women I’ve been nominated alongside are simply remarkable, remarkably talented. I hold each of you dear and feel privileged to be in the same category as you,” expressed the actress from Scandal.
In expressing my heartfelt appreciation, I’d like to extend a special thank you to my cherished fans, my loving family, and the remarkable individuals who made my latest cinematic journey possible. This includes the visionary Tyler Perry, the innovative platform of Netflix, and the incredibly talented castmates who shared this adventure with me. Together, we created something truly memorable.
Kerry expressed his deepest gratitude towards the remarkable 6888’s 855 women. Their actions demonstrated to us the exceptional qualities that black women have consistently possessed.
When historical narratives are being taken away from us, as some attempt to silence our voices, we are here to share your tales, women, since you are propelling us towards our magnificence, and this evening’s event embodies exactly that.
In essence, Kerry was saying that we’re all invited to reach our full potential, so don’t forget your own greatness, as this is what the struggle is aimed at achieving.
Just moments after concluding her speech, Kerry promptly returned to the stage and interjected during the presentation of the next award, addressing what she believed was an oversight on her part.
She expressed her embarrassment by saying she hadn’t thanked Tyler Perry, but was then relieved when informed she had indeed thanked him earlier, prompting her to happily exit the stage once more.
The event was orchestrated by comedian Deon Cole, a familiar face across many American households due to his successful run on the popular sitcom “Black-ish”.
Previously elected U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris received the Chairman’s Award about four months following her defeat in the presidential election against Donald Trump.
The Wayans family received recognition by being inducted into the NAACP Image Award’s Hall of Fame. A heartfelt tribute video highlighted significant contributors like Keenen Ivory Wayans and notable works such as “In Living Color” and “White Chicks.
On stage, Damon Wayans Sr., along with his siblings Marlon Wayans, Damon Wayans Jr., Kim Wayans, Chaunté Wayans, Damien Dante Wayans, and Craig Wayans, graciously received the award.
They gave speeches honoring Keenen, the individual who kick-started the family’s professional journey, although he has mostly stayed out of the limelight lately.
In my line of work as a lifestyle expert, I’ve had the pleasure of hearing some truly inspiring tales, and Marlon’s story about Keenen is one that warms my heart. You see, Keenen, with dreams of making people laugh as a comedian, brought his younger siblings into the thrilling world of show business.
It seems that Keenen often recommends classic comedies, such as Airplane! and The Kentucky Fried Movie, to his younger siblings for their viewing pleasure.
At that moment, Keenen decided to go out for an evening, following which he asked his brothers to watch the movies while he was gone and share with him their thoughts on what they found amusing upon his return home.
Regardless of the situation, Keenen often arrived home with a woman described as attractive, and prior to retiring to his bedroom, he would always consult his siblings about movies first.
The next morning, they’d chat about the movies, and Keenen posed a question to his siblings about ways they could enhance their ongoing projects, thereby sparking their imaginative minds.
I want to express that we wouldn’t be here without our older brother, Keenen Ivory Wayans, so I speak for the entire Wayans family in offering our gratitude to him above all others,” said Damon with warmth.
At the awards ceremony, Queen Latifah was recognized as the top actress in a drama series for her performance on The Equalizer, however, she was unable to attend the event personally.
Quinta Brunson was unable to attend the award ceremony where she received the prize for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary, a show she herself writes.
Michael Rainey Jr. received recognition as the top actor in a dramatic television series for his performance in Power Book II: Ghost, enthusiastically accepting his award onstage.
He playfully mentioned that he was trembling on stage, not only due to his anxiety about public speaking, but also because the room was incredibly chilly.
In simpler terms, during the awards ceremony, Damon Wayans was awarded Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Poppa’s House. Humbly, he admitted that he hadn’t prepared a speech because he thought he wouldn’t win.
Martin Lawrence was honored as the top film actor for Bad Boys: Ride or Die, yet he wasn’t present to receive the award.
