Kelsey Grammer Demolishes 200-Year-Old Cottage for Modern Home

Kelsey Grammer has ignited a dispute with his neighbors following the approval for him to tear down a historically significant cottage close to Portishead, Somerset.

Kelsey Grammer, famously known for playing Frasier, intends to demolish a house that’s been standing for two centuries since his idea to renovate and extend it was rejected by the city council last year.

Approximately two years ago, the American actor, aged 70, along with his wife, Kayte Walsh, a former flight attendant from Bristol who is now 46, purchased a property boasting breathtaking vistas of the Bristol Channel and Welsh coastline. Their primary motivation for this acquisition was to be nearer to Kayte’s family.

In my line of work as a lifestyle connoisseur, I’ve had the pleasure of discovering many unique properties, but few can rival the charm of this coastal gem that harks back to the late 1800s. The traditional quarry tiles, ceiling timbers, and stone fireplaces are not just features; they’re storytellers, each one whispering tales of a bygone era. This isn’t just a house – it’s a piece of history waiting to be cherished.

As reported by The Sun, he intends to build a contemporary residence featuring a game room and fitness center.

Previously, his aim was to transform the property into a more contemporary, high-end four-bedroom house featuring a combined kitchen and dining area, a cozy living space, and a study room.

He sought approval from the North Somerset Council to knock down old and run-down additions, along with a conservatory, and construct a brand new two-story side extension. However, his plan was turned down.

In January, he put forward a fresh plan, this time under his company The Fossil UK Trust, to seek approval for the demolition of both the house and garage. However, according to planners, such permission isn’t necessary.

As a devoted follower, I’ve come across a notification affixed to a quaint cottage. It states that the structure is scheduled for demolition, starting from March 15th, and the area will subsequently be flattened and cleared.

Irritated locals have been expressing their opinions in the comment section of the planning application, which is available on the council’s website.

One neighbor expressed worry about the potential plan to tear down a charming cottage constructed in a traditional design, which sits visibly along the coastal highway, being discussed.

Building structures on this roadside tract could disrupt the tranquil, rustic atmosphere of this region, fostering urban expansion. Such construction might serve as a blueprint for future developments along this significant coastal zone.

Another commented: ‘It’s deeply unfortunate if a charming, historically significant old house were torn down. The other arguments equally make it clear that demolition ought to be avoided.’

Simultaneously, another person noted that the cottage is among the rare dwellings visible on the 1840 tithe maps, situated along the coastal route connecting Portishead and Clevedon.

Initially nestled amidst the dense Portishead Down heathlands and later bordered by farmlands, this ancient cottage has witnessed the evolution of Portishead and its neighboring parishes. As the passage of time brought growth and expansion to these communities, so did the landscape around this historic home change.

The remarkable beauty of this historical structure alone makes it unsuitable for any consideration of demolition.

If we don’t appreciate and preserve our architectural history like this one, who can stop careless developers and indifferent officials from erasing it? Let’s treasure this charming cottage instead of letting it disappear.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I can’t fathom the idea that such an historic cottage, dating back at least 185 years, could be demolished. It’s simply unacceptable.

TopMob has contacted a representative for Kelsey for comment. 

The previous application indicated his intention to demolish an existing garage and carport, followed by constructing a new basement area which would serve as a gym, game room, guest bedroom, and storage space for wine (cellar).

Additional ideas featured revamped entrances and exits, a backyard patio, exterior steps, and modifications to the landscape such as a solid surface area and a newly designed driveway.

Neighbors did not raise any concerns, however, the local parish council showed some apprehension towards the significant expansion of the 1,828 square feet property.

In the letter, it was mentioned that the cottage is like a hidden gem along the coastal road. Therefore, any updates to the cottage should aim to match its charm rather than the changes made in the surrounding properties.

‘Rather than the 50% rule of thumb for footprint expansion, this appears to be nearer 150%.

If the proposed design is approved, it’s crucial that the final touches are delicately handled and the overall appearance of the structure’s layout should be visually appealing.

Considering the surrounding properties that are also located near the highway, this proposition doesn’t appear to stand out as being incongruous or mismatched.

The cottage, along with its surrounding structures, can be traced back to the post-medieval era, making it one of the most historically significant homes in the vicinity.

It is located close by an ancient scheduled monument, which includes a hillfort, a saucer-shaped barrow, a banjo enclosure (all named for their unique shapes), and earthworks that date back to the Iron Age.

The real estate agency, Knight Frank, characterized Grammer’s latest abode as an enchanting standalone cottage boasting breathtaking vistas of the English Channel, extending all the way to the Welsh coastline.

In their rejection of the application, North Somerset Council stated that the proposed extension would significantly increase the interior space (approximately doubling it) and could negatively impact the property’s historical charm and aesthetic appeal. The property, they noted, is considered a ‘heritage asset.’

They also cited concerns over road safety as a new roadway would have bad visibility.

Originally from New Jersey and then Florida, Grammer, her husband, acquired a property in the Western region to be nearer to Kayte Walsh’s family, who hails from Bristol.

Since tying the knot with Kayte, the daughter of ex-Bristol City footballer Alan, in 2011, the star has frequently appeared in the region over the years.
