As a fan who vividly remembers the days of Cheers and Frasier dominating the small screen, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic delight when I think about Kelsey Grammer’s brief yet memorable stint on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Kelsey Grammer is among the select few high-profile actors who joined Star Trek, and it’s still puzzling to many why this was the case. Despite being a highly recognized figure, Grammer has graced our screens as a prominent character on Cheers and later starred in his own successful series, Frasier. Many of us remember him from X-Men 3: The Last Stand, where he brilliantly portrayed Henry McCoy, better known as Beast.
Without a doubt, the most impressive aspect of that movie. He’s generally recognized for his complex characters. So far, the realm of science fiction hasn’t entangled him, and it might never do so. However, he once appeared as Dr. Frasier Crane in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
In episode 18 of season five, titled “Cause and Effect”, Kelsey Grammer made a guest appearance as Captain Bateson. Although his screen time was limited, he left a significant impact on fans with his solo performance. The fact that such a prominent actor (it was 1992) graced the Star Trek series boosted its reputation within the acting community and paved the way for other high-profile actors to join the cast, some of whom were previously considered unattainable.
In an interview with Cinemablend, Grammer was queried about his decision to loosen up and join Star Trek, given his typically formal image. According to him, only one individual was responsible for this change, as he stated.
But the thing that turned me on, Jonathan Frakes was a buddy. He called one day, I was at Cheers, and he said, ‘Will you come over and do a show for us?’ And I said, ‘Well, I don’t know, what’s the deal?’ He says, ‘Well, he’s a contemporary of Captain Kirk’s.’ That was the one that hooked me. So I got to wear the same uniform they wore in the original Star Trek, and that made me really happy.
It seems Grammer either forgot his turn or wasn’t aware, but the costume in question didn’t originate from the initial series, instead it was from the second movie. Despite this, it was a memorable appearance and one that suited him well. Though Grammer might not be as famous as he used to be, he can still deliver an impressive performance. Perhaps there’s a chance for him to embark on another space journey as Bateson.
