Kellie Finlayson reveals time she ‘didn’t want to wake up’ and ‘asked the nurses to turn off the machines’ amid terminal cancer diagnosis

Kellie Finlayson has given a heartbreaking insight into her terminal cancer battle in her new book.

A courageous mother, wife of the well-known football player Jeremy Finlayson from Port Adelaide, is currently fighting stage 4 bowel and lung cancer. In the past few months, she has had a thoracic operation.

In 2021, she was initially diagnosed with bowel cancer, and it was disclosed in 2022 that the disease had metastasized (spread) to her lungs.

As a devoted follower, I recount an instance when I found myself reluctant to rise from my slumber. In this moment of deep fatigue, I humbly requested the kind nurses to suspend the operation of the medical equipment.

Kellie shared with Woman’s Day that she spoke of moments when she felt reluctant to rise in the morning, as well as an instance where I requested medical equipment to be discontinued. These experiences touched emotions within me that Jeremy was unaware I possessed, she explained.

Experiencing it felt incredibly exposed initially, yet it remains the most rewarding accomplishment in my life. It offers insights into my journey that others can grasp.

Previously, the inspirational mother expressed her heartfelt pride in sharing this work with me and everyone, and admitted that she continued to be baffled daily about why my tale is considered significant enough to be published in a book.

‘Imposter syndrome is screaming, but deep down, I know this is bigger than me.

This is intended for individuals who’ve experienced destruction, for those who feel isolated, for those whose tales are now silent.

‘For those who are stuck for words, for those who feel helpless.

Reflecting on my life, it seems as if I’ve experienced multiple lifetimes, but the notion of becoming an author, aside from being a mother, is undeniably the most extraordinary experience I’ve encountered thus far.

‘This is hope. This is me – the rawest version of me.’

In March, Finlayson disclosed that she’d undergone a Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), a type of minimally invasive procedure, to extract a tissue sample from her lungs.

She revealed that doctors had removed metastatic tissue from her lungs.

In simpler terms, metastasis happens when cancerous cells break away from their initial growth (the primary tumor) and travel throughout the body, establishing additional growths in different locations.

The young mum published a clip of herself lying in a hospital bed, writing: ‘Me a week ago’.

In the upcoming shot, Finlayson appeared radiant and healthy, momentarily showing a short video of two scars on the side of her left ribcage, which were results of her recent operation.

Approximately a week past, Kellie underwent a Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) to perform a wedge resection on her right lung, aiming to extract Metastases for pathology examination in search of further clarification and potential improved treatment options.

‘I’ve had soooo many people checking in to see how I’m doing, thank you!!!

Indeed, I’m doing surprisingly well, considering the significant surgery I’ve recently had. I realize not everyone shares my fortune. Yet, I’m grateful for every bit of progress in this ongoing journey.
