Keeley Hawes’ new BBC drama isn’t perfect, but it’s got heart
The BBC’s new period drama Miss Austen is careful and considerate in its storytelling.
The TV show, based on the popular book by Gill Hornby, might have had a distinctly altered tone if it were true that many of Jane Austen’s original letters were actually destroyed by her sister, as has been speculated for years.
In contrast to the image that Regency era, letter-writing, pastel colors, and heartfelt matters might evoke for Lady Whistledown, this is far from being similar to Bridgerton.
Absolutely, the BBC series showcases typical elements associated with historical genres. It features grand, picturesque mansions as backdrops, transporting you to the era through its authentic costume designs.
Sometimes, the storyline gets a bit tangled, and the conflicts feel more like polite squabbles than intense battles. With so many characters to juggle, it can be quite challenging to keep their relationships straight, and at times, it feels like a daunting task.
In the new production, Keeley Hawes (from “Bodyguard”) assumes the main role as Cassandra Austen, Jane Austen’s older sister who is less famously known. This role seems to be one of her more restrained performances, making Cassandra feel real and solid, mirroring the story’s own earthy tone.
In Miss Austen, there’s a sense of warmth and empathy, but she doesn’t stick to one tone; instead, she can be brusque towards Cassandra at times as well. Hawes’ portrayal is captivating in this regard, making the audience feel welcomed back into her favor – a compelling lead character who manages to step out of the shadow of her well-known sibling.
The portrayal of the younger Cassandra (performed by Synnøve Karlsen) shares a smart and distinct connection with Hawes’ interpretation of the character, adding further complexity and a bond that makes both performances engaging.
In this production, we switch between two time periods, enabling a deep examination of the affection between the two Austen sisters. We get insights into Jane’s feelings through her correspondence, while Cass’s recollections also play a significant role.
Patsy Ferran truly shines in her portrayal of the young Jane Austen. Her performance beautifully captures a perceptive and insightful individual, who despite being born prematurely for her era, clearly shows signs of being far ahead of her time.
The difference between the two sisters is quite apparent. While Cassandra fits neatly into society’s mold for women and is sought after on the marriage market, Jane, on the other hand, sometimes causes concern among her parents. Despite this, as George Austen (Kevin McNally) reassures them, their brilliance may express itself in unique ways.
This series appears to embody the essence of Jane Austen. Unlike those around her who focused on marriage and its intricate machinations, she channeled her literary talents into social critique during an era when few opportunities were accessible to women.
As the narrative progresses, Cassandra blooms more beautifully, making it just right that by envisioning this scenario, Jane’s sibling might gain some well-deserved acknowledgment for sharing in that family’s history and lore.
The BBC series ‘Miss Austen’ is particularly enjoyable when seen as a heartfelt tribute to Jane Austen and her female kin. This affectionate perspective allows viewers to fully appreciate it.
Miss Austen will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on Sunday, February 2.
