Keeley Hawes and Succession star husband Matthew Macfadyen enjoy a rare red carpet date night at the premiere of Netflix’s Death By Lightning

Keeley Hawes and Matthew Macfadyen, known for their roles in shows like Succession, stepped out together for a rare public appearance at the premiere of the Netflix documentary, Death By Lightning, on Monday.

The couple, married for 21 years this month, took a photo together at The Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Keeley, age 49, looked radiant in a red dress with a high neckline. The dress had a slightly worn look and a see-through skirt.

I always love seeing her support her husband, and she looked amazing doing it! She put together a really chic outfit, finished with those timeless black stilettos, and kept her hair sleek and straight – a perfect look!

Matthew, age 50, plays Charles J. Guiteau in the series. He chose a brown double-breasted blazer and paired it with a striped tie.

Oh my gosh, you HAVE to hear about this! It’s about President James Garfield – seriously, he was amazing – and this absolutely fascinating man, Charles Guiteau, who, well, he shot him in 1881. It’s a true story, and it’s just… incredible. It’s called ‘Death By Lightning,’ and it details everything that happened with Garfield’s presidency and Guiteau’s actions. I’m totally obsessed!

The story will depict Charles’s journey into insanity, beginning with a friendly relationship with the American President that gradually transforms into a dangerous and all-consuming obsession.

This series, inspired by a historical novel and mini-series about James A. Garfield, explores the events that drove Charles to commit murder.

Matthew will star alongside Michael Shannon, who will play the President, and Betty Gilpin as First Lady Crete Garfield.

The actress posted several loving photos with the Succession actor, along with a sweet message about their relationship, which has lasted a long time.

The photos included lovely moments of the couple on a perfect boat ride, sharing affectionate displays at a pub, and a playful shot of Matthew sitting on a lawnmower.

Keeley shared a heartfelt message declaring her love, writing simply: ’21 years. No notes. Love you with all my heart ✨’

Keeley and Matthew have two children: Maggie, who is 20, and Ralph, who is 19. Matthew is also the stepdad to Keeley’s 25-year-old son, Myles, from a previous relationship.

This couple is famous for having a remarkably solid marriage in Hollywood. They consistently prioritize spending time together, even with their busy careers.

However, Matthew admitted things didn’t begin well, once calling the moment he fell for Keeley ‘awful’.

Keeley met Matthew on the set of the TV show Spooks in 2002. At the time, she was newly married to a cartoonist named Spencer and had a young son, Myles.

Matthew confessed he developed feelings for Keeley while filming the BBC spy series, but emphasized that they didn’t become involved until after her breakup with Spencer in May 2002.

In a 2005 interview with the Mail on Sunday, he explained that he and the woman were not having an affair, but that developing feelings was a gradual process. He acknowledged her strong effect on him, describing her as ‘gorgeous’ and saying that anyone who meets her would agree.

Keeley has admitted to having a crush on her Spooks co-star, Matthew. She told Vanity Fair in 2022 that he unexpectedly confessed his feelings for her one rainy day, saying “I love you.” She jokingly recalled thinking, “Oh dear, here we go!” when he did.

She finalized her divorce from Spencer in 2004, and quickly married Matthew that same year in a small ceremony at the Richmond registry office. A month later, they welcomed their first child, Maggie.

The couple recently shared that they’re excited about the next chapter of their relationship once their children have grown up and moved out.

Matthew shared that he’s excited to spend more quality time with Keeley and take lots of short trips together when they have a bit more free time.

In a July 2024 interview with CBS, he described this stage of life as a fresh, exciting chapter. He joked about enjoying small breaks, contrasting it with the intense demands of raising young children, when it feels like everything is all-consuming. He acknowledged that feeling doesn’t last forever.

Then you realize, thankfully, the people you’re with are genuinely kind, amusing, and aren’t afraid to both make you smile and keep you in line.
