Despite being released over two decades ago, the film is finding new popularity with viewers on streaming platforms, especially as fans eagerly await Keanu Reeves‘ return for a sequel. The action horror movie, directed by Francis Lawrence, is still a favorite of Reeves himself, and many are hoping he’ll reprise his role as the DC Comics character.
Since its release on HBO Max on January 1st, Constantine has become the fourth most-watched movie on the platform. This gives director Chad Stahelski four films in the streaming service’s top 10: John Wick (2014) at number 2, John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) at number 5, and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) at number 8.
Besides performing worse than the first John Wick movie, Constantine also earned less than Greenland (2020), landing it in third place. Currently leading the top 10 is One Battle After Another (2025), a critically praised film and a strong contender for Oscars this year.
Despite costing $100 million to make and earning $230 million in theaters, the movie Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, and Peter Stormare, wasn’t considered a blockbuster. However, it’s found lasting popularity through streaming and home video, and that success has led to plans for a follow-up film.
Development of Constantine 2 began as early as 2011, but it didn’t seem likely to actually happen until September 2022, when reports surfaced that Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishburne were set to return. Since then, progress has been slow, although Keanu Reeves told Inverse in February that they had finally agreed on a story idea and were beginning to write the script.
James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, shared an update on Constantine 2 in October, mentioning he’d spoken with Keanu Reeves about it, but hadn’t read a script yet. There haven’t been any new announcements since then, but it’s likely Akiva Goldsman is still writing the screenplay.
While a sequel is being discussed, Constantine 2 isn’t confirmed yet. The project will move forward if the script is completed and approved this year. If everything goes according to plan, filming might begin in 2027, though it could easily be delayed until 2028. This means we might see the movie released in either 2028 or 2029.
Okay, so we’re all still itching for any news about a Constantine sequel, right? But it’s cool to see the original movie getting a lot of love on streaming right now. I don’t know if this will force anyone to greenlight a second one, but it definitely shows there’s still a huge appetite for Keanu Reeves back as John Constantine, and honestly, I’m right there with them – bring it on!
