Keanu Reeves transforms into ‘inept’ guardian angel as he stars alongside Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer in Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut Good Fortune

In the upcoming directorial debut of Aziz Ansari titled “Good Fortune,” Keanu Reeves is expected to take on a role as an inept guardian angel, with Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, and Keke Palmer also starring in this production.

The comedy unfolds around Gabriel, a kind-hearted yet bungling angel, who interferes in the lives of two contrasting characters: Aziz, a hard-up freelancer, and Seth, a successful venture capitalist.

The first teaser for the much-awaited comedy has just been unveiled, providing a glimpse of Keanu in his role as an angel.

As an ardent admirer, I’d rephrase it like this: I can’t help but gush about the 60-year-old John Wick star. He’s not your typical angel, instead, he dons a police detective-inspired jacket, paired with a crisp shirt and tie, carrying out his divine duties in a way that only he can.

Additionally, he has tiny wings on his back that seem even smaller due to the presence of Sandra Oh’s character Martha in the scene. Keke Palmer is also part of the cast.

At the outset, we find Gabriel perched atop a rooftop, taking in the sights of Los Angeles, engaged in conversation with an angel named Martha, who is played by Sandra Oh.

‘Martha, is there any way I can have more meaningful duties?’ Gabriel asks. 

‘Martha says, “I aim to lead others; I aspire to impact their lives.” Her sentiment is expressed as, “In order to rescue someone who has strayed, one must first locate that person who has strayed.’

For Gabriel, it doesn’t require much time. One evening on top of a Los Angeles Denny’s restaurant, he uncovers an aspect of Ansari that resonates with him.

Gabriel moves towards the individual, informing him that he is an angel, usually engaged in rescuing people from texting while driving. However, at present, he’s seeking a more profound occupation.

‘Wait,’ Ansari says. ‘You’re telling me I have a budget guardian angel?’ 

The movie represents Ansari’s first attempt at directing a full-length film, having previously been both the leading actor and showrunner for Netflix’s Master of None.

Under Aziz’s penmanship, direction, production, and lead role, Good Fortune serves as a fresh take on his initial directorial endeavor, Being Mortal.

Originally, his first directorial venture was set to release in 2022 under the name ‘Being Mortal’. However, the project collapsed at Searchlight Pictures following allegations of sexual harassment against lead actor Bill Murray, involving a young female team member.

It’s said that Bill allegedly finalized a $100,000 payment to the woman in 2022 following the completion of the investigation.

During a conversation with The New York Times in April, Murray openly shared that the event continues to linger in his thoughts – despite his resolute stance on the investigation’s conclusion, which he perceived as being unjust.

He started talking about the incident by mentioning, “Let me tell you, I’m not sure why I did it, but it was something I had done to someone else in the past. To me, it seemed amusing at the time, and every occurrence of it made me laugh.

Murray clarified that, as they filmed during the coronavirus pandemic and everyone wore masks, he planted a kiss on one of his masked female crew members who remained unidentified.

‘It wasn’t like I touched her, but it was just, I gave her a kiss through a mask.’

In Being Mortal, a project inspired by Atul Gawande’s 2014 book with the same title, Seth and Keke were both slated to play leading roles.

2022 saw Keke inform Variety that finishing the film without Bill might necessitate a significant script revision. However, if someone could find a solution, they believed Aziz was capable of doing so.

Good Fortune is set to be released in movie theatres on October 17, 2025.
