Work on a new Matrix movie is underway, and fans are eager to know if Keanu Reeves will be back. Director Drew Goddard recently spoke about this, providing some insight but stopping short of a firm confirmation.

Drew Goddard is taking on the challenge of writing and directing the fifth Matrix movie, and he’s being careful about sharing details. He recently said the project is still being written, which is why he can’t reveal much at this stage. When asked if Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Neo, Goddard avoided a direct answer, suggesting that no cast members have been officially confirmed. He didn’t rule it out, though, leaving the possibility open (according to Variety).

I’m really getting the sense that James Goddard is taking this new project very seriously, even before we know who’s going to be in it. He’s spoken so highly of the Wachowskis – Lana and Lilly – and how much their original movies meant to him, which is awesome. He says he wants to honor both the fans and what they created, but also tell a story that he truly believes in. It sounds like he’s walking a tightrope, but in a good way!

As a huge movie fan, I remember when The Matrix first came out in 1999. It totally blew my mind! Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss led us into this incredibly dark and twisted world where it turned out humans were unknowingly living in a fake reality. Everyone loved it – critics and audiences alike. The sequels then built on that amazing foundation, really digging deeper into the story and expanding the universe in cool ways.

The latest Matrix film, Resurrections, didn’t receive much positive feedback. But director Drew Goddard actually liked it a lot, calling it the most emotionally impactful of all four movies. Unfortunately, the timing of its release wasn’t ideal. It came out during the pandemic when many people weren’t going to theaters, and Warner Bros. was simultaneously releasing films on streaming services.

For now, The Matrix 5 remains in early development.
