Keanu Reeves, 59, talks 'crippling' obsession with dying and reveals why he's 'thinking about death all the time'

I’ve had the pleasure of following Keanu Reeves’ career for what feels like an eternity now. His talent and charisma have graced our screens for nearly four decades, leaving an indelible mark on popular culture. From his iconic portrayal of Neo in The Matrix to his more recent role as the suave and deadly John Wick, Keanu has continually pushed boundaries and redefined what it means to be a leading man.

Keanu Reeves openly shared that he frequently ponders over the reality of mortality, contradicting his popular image as everlastingly young.

‘I’m 59, so I’m thinking about death all the time,’ the Matrix vet told BBC News on Monday.

Actor join forces with China Miévelle on the BBC to discuss their latest collaboration, “The Book of Elsewhere.” In this intriguing novel, an everlasting character yearns for death is explored – an unusual theme that the duo delves into during their promotion.

The John Wick star added that he’s trying to keep the focus on death in perspective.

He expressed that it’s hopefully not a debilitating experience, but rather one that may make us more mindful of the value of our breath and the meaningful connections we can build.

As an avid fan, I can tell you that The Book of Elsewhere takes its cues from the widely acclaimed BRZRKR comic book saga, masterfully brought to life by Keanu Reeves himself.

In 2021, the project named BRZRKR, which can be pronounced as “berserker,” was introduced. This production is planned for adaptation into live-action format on Netflix, with Reeves set to star. Additionally, an upcoming anime series based on BRZRKR is in the works.

“Keanu expressed his fondness for comic book visuals, adding, ‘I adore the written word and narrative, and I’m captivated by how these elements harmoniously blend together.'”

‘And so you can look at the art and then you can follow the story.’

Last week at the MotoGP Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix in Germany, Keanu Reeves and his girlfriend, Alexandra Grant, drew attention as they enjoyed a full life experience together, subsequently generating buzz for the upcoming book promotion.

Keanu and Alexandra smiled brightly as they made their way through the throng, ultimately reaching the opportunity to hoist the checked flag aloft.

An ideal choice for their first date was the MotoGP event, considering Keanu started ARCH Motorcycle, his personalized motorbike business, in 2011.

In May, the couple had an elegant engagement at the Hammer Museum’s Garden Gala, which called for them to dress up smartly.

Later that month, they were additionally seen having dinner at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, California.

In November 2019, Keanu and Alexandra made their relationship official by attending the LACMA Art + Film Gala hand in hand on the red carpet.

The artist’s disclosure ignited great curiosity, drawing numerous questions about their romantic involvement from various sources.

In the beginning of November last year, I was surprised when almost everyone I knew reached out to me within the same week. That’s quite intriguing, I shared during an interview with British Vogue a few months afterward.

For several decades, the duo, who operate X Artists’ Books as their publishing business, have maintained a strong friendship.

In February 2020, Jennifer Tilly, a friend and actress of Alexandra’s, disclosed that they have been a couple for quite some time.

Around two years ago, approximately 18 months ago, Alexandra made a surprising statement to me: “Keanan Reeves is my boyfriend.” At that moment, I was taken aback and asked, “Really? Are you sure?” or something along those lines.

As an obsessed fan looking back on their connection, I can’t pinpoint the precise instant they crossed paths, but their bond reaches as far back as 2011. This was a pivotal year for both of them, marking the release of their masterpiece, “Ode to Happiness,” which undeniably laid the foundation for their unforgettable journey together.

In September 2023, Alexandra told People Keanu helped take her art to a new level.

A few years ago, I welcomed a renowned visitor in my studio. With kindness and esteem in his demeanor, he remarked, “Your artwork seems more joyful now.”

Based on my personal experiences and observations, I strongly believe that we are all real, authentic human beings. Despite our differences, we share a commonality as animals living on this earth. We each have unique perspectives and ways of expressing ourselves, shaped by our individual experiences and backgrounds. In my opinion, the true joy and fulfillment in life comes from embracing this reality and finding happiness within ourselves and in our connections with others. The work we create or engage in can bring us immense satisfaction when it reflects our authentic selves and resonates with those around us.

She went on to call Keanu her ‘inspiration.’

In March of last year, Keanu offered some insight into his relationship with Alexandra.

When asked by People to share his most recent moment of happiness, he replied, “A few days ago, my loved one and I shared a profound connection during a quiet moment in bed.”

I can relate to that feeling of joy and camaraderie. We shared genuine smiles, laughter, and even some light-hearted giggles. The atmosphere was simply delightful as we reveled in each other’s company.

In the upcoming movie “Good Fortune,” Keanu Reeves will be featured alongside the directorial first-timer Aziz Ansari. The talented duo will be joined on screen by Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer.

After the writers’ strike disrupted production last year, Good Fortune’s filming started in January 2024, primarily in Los Angeles’ Koreatown area.

Over almost four decades, Reeves has gained a large fan base, largely due to his striking portrayal of a hitman in the highly successful John Wick series.

Prior to John Wick making him famous, he gained recognition for his role as Neo in The Matrix trilogy, which came out in 1999, 2003, and 2002, with a more recent addition in 2021.
