Kay Burley’s Shocking ‘Retirement’: The Untold Story of Power, Betrayal, and a Battle for Sky News
Whenever I cross paths with Kay Burley, I can’t help but feel a mix of awe and trepidation. She exudes an irresistible charm and her humor is infectious – it’s hard not to be drawn in. Yet, beneath that warm exterior lies a resilient spirit that I wouldn’t dare cross.
Those who have worked with her at Sky News over her incredible 36-year reign say the same.
One might say that she governs firmly yet fair-mindedly, as she appreciates excellent talent, shows kindness, and is a strong advocate for other women. However, it’s best to avoid provoking her.
64-year-old Burley is quite traditional and has stringent expectations that many appreciate. However, it appears that the younger team members at Sky aren’t as fond of her; they’ve allegedly been calling for her resignation for years. In 2020, during the lockdown, someone even shared with me information about a birthday party she hosted, which reportedly violated Covid-19 safety guidelines.
Together with her ex-best friend, Beth Rigby (a political editor for Sky News), as well as some of their coworkers, they had a gathering at the Century Club, centrally located in London.
As the result of my story, she was taken off air for six months.
Kay admitted later, “I believed I was adhering to Covid guidelines, but I erred. I acted foolishly and let myself and my audience down. I’m truly sorry for my actions and any distress I caused my loyal companions who were with me at the time. The appropriate penalties were imposed.
As a lifestyle expert, I can tell you that I’ve heard some young fans were quite upset by this turn of events. One source close to Sky shared with me, “They genuinely believed they wouldn’t see her again.” The sentiment was, “They assumed they had ended her career, thinking the management would never take her back after she violated rules during the pandemic.
‘They believed she wouldn’t be able to analyze MPs anymore, but don’t underestimate Kay. Despite the significant power she held, she accepted her punishment gracefully and seemed unaffected by it. The children were quite upset.’
On a lively Wednesday morning at Sky News, it’s safe to say there was much joy among the young employees under 30, as they heard Burley announce her retirement – a move that comes more than four years after an unsuccessful attempt to remove her from her position.
After broadcasting television news for over a million minutes, making me the most active globally, it’s now my turn to explore other interests, particularly my enthusiasm for traveling, she announced.
After reporting on twelve distinct general elections, such as Sir Keir Starmer’s win last year, I am choosing to retire from Sky News. Let politicians across all parties celebrate this news.
I just wanted to express my gratitude for consistently joining me each morning, it’s been a pleasure. Your backing over the past 35 years has meant so much to me – you’re truly amazing!
‘I will post more on my social media and hope to see you around. Please keep in touch.’
Her declaration, made on Sky’s 36th birthday, carried a deeper emotional impact. From an outside perspective, it appeared that this day, being one of the channel’s original presenters stepping down, was a fitting choice.
But is there more to this decision than meets the eye?
It’s widely believed among those inside the network that Burley’s role was growing more difficult to maintain, according to their assertions.
One might say, ‘Kay was quite pricey, considering her expectations: she desired top-tier respect, substantial compensation, ample freedom, and unquestioned authority over her decisions. Her work ethic was remarkable, bordering on relentless, but as time passed, the landscape began to shift.’
For many decades, television companies have employed a large number of young staff behind the scenes. However, Sky had a tendency to hire staff with strong left-leaning views. Some of these individuals were quite sensitive or liberal, which did not align with Kay’s style. She values results and excellence, and these two cultures often butted heads. There are rumors that her departure was not entirely voluntary.
‘She loved that job but things became very uncomfortable in recent years.’
In my enthusiastic fandom, I can’t help but notice that Kay isn’t the only one from her generation who’s had creative differences with a more youthful production crew.
In 2021, Piers Morgan, a dear friend of Burley’s, was compelled to resign from ITV’s Good Morning Britain following his unwillingness to issue an apology for expressing doubt about Meghan Markle’s claim that she experienced suicidal thoughts while in the UK, during her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
He says he was driven out by his younger, woke colleagues.
It’s been claimed that Sky has grown more progressive or socially aware to a fault. However, this insider maintains that Kay takes a straight-forward approach and doesn’t sugarcoat things, referring to issues as they are.
Speaking of finances, the topic of Sky’s future has been a hot one lately. Despite having an annual budget of approximately £100 million, reports suggest that it has accumulated losses totaling tens of millions of pounds.
In recent months, there’s been a significant decrease in the number of work schedules, according to staff reports. However, Sky News maintains that certain expense categories, particularly staffing, have grown, despite reductions in freelancer fees.
According to a source, Burley’s alleged yearly salary of £600,000 appears to be disproportionate compared to the overall expenditure.
Friends deny retirement rumors about her, stating it’s highly unlikely. Her recent announcement as a new celebrity client by Dundas Communications on the heels of her shocking Sky revelation appears to confirm this.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself reflecting on the dynamic media personality, Dundas, whose impressive roster of clients includes Kate Garraway, Dermot O’Leary, and Billie Piper. Their association with pure entertainment has sparked rumors that Burley might be considering a shift away from news presenting.
For her, it’s going to be quite a shift. Having spent her childhood in Wigan, Lancashire under the care of working-class parents, she went on to study at Whitley High School. At the age of 17, she embarked on her journalistic career with the Wigan Evening Post and Chronicle. Later, she worked for various BBC local radio stations, then at Tyne Tees Television. In 1985, she joined TV-am as a reporter and occasional newsreader, but that station is no longer in operation now.
Her big break came when she was recruited by Andrew Neil for Sky News in 1989, covering big stories like the death of Diana, Princess of Wales and the September 11 US terror attacks.
Back in 2010, I, quite famously, made Peter Andre shed tears during an interview where I delved deep into his relationship with his then-ex, Katie Price, shortly after their separation.
After numerous complaints to Ofcom and criticism from Andre, Brash Burley was found not guilty of bullying. Known for being bold and straightforward, she was granted her own afternoon show on Sky News in September 2018. A year later, she was shifted to the morning slot, with her program renamed as “Breakfast With Kay Burley.” Her show consistently attracted around 125,000 viewers.
At a grand unveiling event, she shared that the morning show she had worked tirelessly on had long been her cherished aspiration.
Now, it’s time for a long sleep before her next action. However, keep in mind that if she appears on any program, it’s unlikely that her younger coworkers from Sky will watch it.
