Katy Perry's cringe comeback is a tacky, flesh-flashing nightmare! And, says CAROLINE BULLOCK, it's sad proof that women suffer humiliating midlife crises too

As a lifestyle expert with over two decades in the entertainment industry, I must say that watching Katy Perry’s current comeback is like witnessing a train wreck in slow motion. It’s a stark reminder of how time can change the tide for even the most successful pop stars.

Approaching her fortieth birthday three months away, and the awkward return of “Teenage Dream” singer Katy Perry is turning into an unsettling midlife challenge.

The prolific hitmaker has stalled with a tacky, flesh-flashing video and dismal single sales.

Currently, she’s intensely promoting her latest album named ‘143’, which is said to be a symbolic representation of her ‘angel number’. However, given her current performance, it seems that the optimistic positioning on music charts might be a more accurate interpretation.

It seems evident that, following a break of four years without releasing new music, the attempt by this aging celebrity to regain popularity has fallen flat.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I found myself standing out at Balenciaga’s recent Parisian couture exhibition in June, sporting an avant-garde ensemble that consisted of an unzipped fur jacket revealing minimal attire beneath. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation and innovation.

Perry, with a serious expression, seemed to imitate the style of Bianca Censori rather than appearing as a believable, worldwide pop icon – this hinted at things to follow. (In a more natural and easy-to-read manner)

Then her ‘Woman’s World’ single dropped… off a cliff, limping into the Billboard charts at No.63.

Under criticism is a song marketed as a feminist anthem with a synthpop beat, due to its association with producer Dr. Luke (who has been accused of sexual assault) and the controversial, objectifying music video it accompanies, which primarily caters to the male perspective.

Outdated and overly eager in appearance, it’s an unsophisticated mix of gas pumps resembling phallic symbols, sex toys like vibrators, and low-cut clothing that exposes cleavage. A surprised-looking Perry can be seen using urinals and delivering cringeworthy, off-key lyrics such as: ‘She’s a bloom, she’s a prickle, superpowered, top of the chart.’

Despite facing criticism, Perry attempts to justify the questionable attention-seeking nature of the video by labeling it as satire, however, people are not convinced.

And as she mom dances her way through this Gaga-lite B side, the joke is very much on her.

Dressed in a bikini and flashing a wide grin, she’s been partying at popular Ibiza clubs with younger crowds, organizing listening sessions for her new album in Paris and London, and treating packed bars by buying drinks while boasting about her wealth to the press.

It all reeks of desperation – and is certainly a far cry from years past.

Born in Santa Barbara and not necessarily the strongest vocalist or dancer, she’s still savored her time basking in California’s sunshine.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the staggering fortune this musical icon has amassed – a whopping $350 million! Her unique blend of playful, witty, and flamboyant style has not only earned her a spot among the world’s wealthiest musicians, but also a timeless place in our hearts.

Katy Perry’s first hit single ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ released in 2008, has now been played over 850 million times on Spotify. In 2010, she achieved an impressive feat by becoming only the second artist after Michael Jackson to have five number-one singles from one album (Teenage Dream). Furthermore, her 2015 Super Bowl halftime show held the record for being the most viewed until very recently.

Apart from enjoying a content family life with her actor spouse Orlando Bloom and their little girl, it appears that at age 39, she craves the fleeting allure of fame and recognition, as if she’s a star who can’t get enough of the spotlight.

As a devoted supporter, I proudly lent my voice to the chorus backing Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. To express my admiration, I creatively shared a customized video of our esteemed Vice President, perfectly synced with the empowering anthem ‘Woman’s World’.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my dismay at the notion that some people believe they can churn out stale, lackluster content and still reap financial rewards without regard for quality. It’s baffling to me how her audience continues to consume such material, seemingly oblivious to its shortcomings.

But the public’s patience for tacky, banal pop dressed up as faux feminism is waning.

Reframing the statement in a more conversational style: It feels like a different era when she was teaming up with artists such as Kanye West (before his controversial antisemitic comments), and now it seems her boldness that propelled her chart-topping songs may not suffice anymore.

Especially as the material gets weaker and fans grow up.

In contrast to my esteemed contemporaries such as Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, who seem to consistently grow and reinvent their artistic styles, I find myself grappling with a perceived lack of evolution in my own craft.

Moreover, the decision has left the 39-year-old, who just stepped down from her role as an American Idol judge (a common source of significant income for many aging popstars), quite vulnerable.

Despite the extensive efforts put into sculpting a beach body and the significant financial investment in this questionable return, Perry’s poorly timed comeback seems to be fizzling out rather than exploding with success.
