Katy Perry’s 143 gets SAVAGED by critics who claim comeback album sounds ‘generated through AI’

Katy Perry's 143 gets SAVAGED by critics who claim comeback album sounds 'generated through AI'

As a long-time Katy Perry fan who has grown up with her music and witnessed her meteoric rise to pop stardom, it is disheartening to see the critical reception of her latest album, 143. Having followed her journey since the days of “I Kissed A Girl” and “Firework,” I have come to appreciate Perry’s clever wit, catchy melodies, and infectious energy that has made her one of the most beloved pop stars of our time.

On Thursday evening, when Katy Perry’s eagerly anticipated seventh studio album, titled 143, became available on streaming services, it didn’t receive favorable reviews from music critics initially.

143, a term that represents both “I love you” and Perry’s personal “angel number,” marks the release of her first album in four years, succeeding “Smile” from 2020.

One damning review from a top entertainment outlet declared that Perry ‘struggles to reclaim past glory on the flat 143.’

Many people criticized the upcoming album prior to its release, largely due to Swift’s choice to collaborate once again with her former music producer, Dr. Luke, who recently resolved a multi-year sexual misconduct allegation with Kesha. However, it’s important to note that he has consistently denied these accusations.

But even with the hitmaker onboard – he produces 10 out of the 11 songs – the reaction so far has been less than favorable.

As a die-hard fan, I’m compelled to express my thoughts on this album: it feels like a letdown. It seems to be sailing on waves of worn-out lyrics and melodies that seldom reach their peak. Over the course of its 11 tracks, Katy Perry’s voice echoes with detachment, as if she were merely filling in between ‘American Idol’ rehearsals.

On this new album, there’s less of the sharp intelligence that made some of her most successful songs stand out – it seems like a step back from the natural, sophisticated charm she was previously known for.

Horowitz also remarks that certain tunes seem overly mechanical, while Crush bears resemblance to a lesser-known track by the Vengaboys.

He notes: ‘Similar to her recent albums, the lyrics of ‘143’ are filled with worn-out phrases, suggesting they were perhaps produced by an artificial intelligence.’

In the review by The Guardian, they awarded the album a rating of 2 out of 5. They stated that the album was not as bad as anticipated, but it also fell short of being considered good.

Critic Alexis Petridis notes: “The album seems a bit behind the times, resembling an ordinary, unremarkable pop record. Unfortunately, it was released after Charli XCX’s Brat, Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and Sabrina Carpenter’s Short N’ Sweet – a group of innovative and incredibly successful albums that hint at an upward trend in the quality of pop music.

143’s commercial success in the past is no longer enough to sustain it; it appears that oversights by its author and team might be more integral to its decline than questionable partnerships, failed videos, or even harm to the sand dunes of S’Espalmador.

The last line referencing Perry being under investigation for possible environmental damage to Spanish dunes where she filmed music video Lifetimes.

Mark Kennedy for AP said the album was ‘uninspired and forgettable’

Kennedy criticizes the last track “Wonder” as the least favored on the album, stating it is an attempt that seems overtly aimed at getting mothers in the audience to sway their hands synchronized with balloons ascending, while simultaneously condemning cynicism.

Despite her daughter Daisy Dove making an appearance on the track, Kennedy adds: ‘But by this point, she’s lost our trust, with the 10 previous songs a sonic slog. ‘143’ has no soul or emotion; it’s just a number.’

The Independent awarded it two stars, commenting that it was “uncomfortably old-fashioned and strikingly detached.

The review implied that Perry seems focused on achieving chart success, stating: ‘Many tracks exhibit a subtle unease, overly concerned with their potential market appeal and lacking genuine enjoyment.’

A 5 out of 10 review from music publication Clash said that ‘the world has moved on.’

‘On the release of ‘143’, there’s a sense that the world has progressed – with Chappell Roan’s tour creating Beatlemania-like scenes of affection and Sabrina Carpenter dominating the charts, it’s challenging to find where this playful yet unsatisfying record belongs in today’s pop music landscape.’

Despite the critical mauling, Perry has found some favorable reviews from fans on X.

Besides her, her husband Orlando Bloom has consistently stood by her during the challenging launch period. He was there to encourage her at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards just recently.
