As a devoted Katy Perry fan for over a decade now, I can’t help but feel a surge of emotions reading about her upcoming performance and Video Vanguard Award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The 143 artist has always been more than just a singer to me; she’s an inspiration, a beacon of creativity, and the embodiment of resilience in the face of adversity.

Katy Perry will be the woman of the hour at next month’s MTV Video Music Awards.

The 39-year-old artist numbered 143 is scheduled to take the stage at this year’s 41st annual awards ceremony. Additionally, she will receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award during the event.

According to the Associated Press, Bruce Gillmer, who serves as chief content officer for music at Paramount+ and also holds the positions of president of music, music talent, programming, and events at Paramount, made the following statement: “Katy is an incredible force in the world of music and a true embodiment of pop culture.”

According to Gillmer, her innovative, groundbreaking creativity has made her a worldwide sensation, dominating the most prominent stages across the globe.

The honor follows Perry’s return to music last year, when she delighted fans by releasing the lead single “Woman’s World” from her seventh studio album 143. Unfortunately, this song didn’t perform well on the charts.

Perry’s patriotic-themed music video, which embraced somewhat empowering but questionable portrayals of women, received a variety of reactions upon its release.

In a behind-the-scenes video, she explained that the image was more about playfulness and a touch of sarcasm. She described it as being quite exaggerated and obvious, reminiscent of classic physical comedy.

Perry explained that with this collection, it seems as though they’re attempting to move away from the male gaze, but in reality, they are quite embracing it. They’re doing so in a way that is overly obvious and explicit.

Currently, Perry is facing criticism following the filming of her ‘Lifetimes’ video on protected sand dunes located in the Balearic Islands.

After unauthorized production, the government of the Spanish archipelago initiated an investigation.

A rep from Capitol Records informed Variety that Perry’s local video production team had been guaranteed they had obtained all essential permits for the video shoot.

It turned out later on that a permit for one instance was still being processed, even though we initially received oral permission to proceed.

The representative noted, ‘We followed all rules regarding filming here and hold great esteem for this site and those responsible for preserving it.’

This will be Perry’s first time at the VMAs since she performed and hosted in 2017.

Ever since she won the Video of the Year award for ‘Firework’ in 2011, Katy Perry has accumulated a total of five MTV Video Music Awards across her career.

Notable recipients of the Video Vanguard Award have been Shakira, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott in the past.

As a dedicated follower of popular culture and current events, I was quite disappointed to learn that this year’s VMAs had been postponed from its original date. However, upon reflection, I realized that the decision made by the organizers to move the event a day later in order to avoid conflict with the highly anticipated presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is not only understandable but also commendable.

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sept. 11 at 8pm ET.
