Katy Perry admits she knows nothing about AFL ahead of her anticipated Grand Final performance: 'It's a game with a ball'

As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience in the music industry, I must admit that Katy Perry’s AFL knowledge is adorably amusing. Her deer-in-headlights expression and comical stammering are reminiscent of many an artist faced with questions outside their comfort zone. It’s refreshing to see such a global pop icon showing her human side, even if it is in the form of a “great game…with a ball.

American pop sensation Katy Perry shared her insights about Australian Football League (AFL) before her expected performance at the upcoming Grand Final in Melbourne on Saturday.

On The Project’s airing on Wednesday, Katy, aged 39, was questioned by host Waleed Ali regarding her familiarity with the sport where she will be showcasing her skills.

With a wide-eyed, bewildered look on camera, Katy awkwardly and humorously struggled to articulate her reply.

She softly replied, “It’s an excellent game…that involves a ball,” drawing plenty of cheers and chuckles from the audience in the studio.

Katy acknowledged one feature of the game, specifically the clothing worn by the players, when panelist Sarah Harris inquired whether she had noticed their uniforms.

‘Short shorts,’ she excitedly exclaimed.

During her trip to Australia, Katy expressed her eagerness to learn more about the sport, but she had already figured out which teams were participating in the major match.

‘I love it. I know it’s the Lions and the Swans,’ she said.

“Indeed, I was already planning to sing ‘Roar’ before the lions arrived, and there’s no particular benefit to doing so.

She went on expressing her enthusiasm, saying, “I can’t wait to discover even more! It’s fascinating to me that the Australian Football League (AFL) was established before the National Football League (NFL). This suggests that the U.S. might be drawing inspiration from Australia in their football development.

Katy was then pressed on which team she would be throwing her support behind come the weekend.

She replied, “I’ll be staying in Switzerland, that’s decided, but I must admit, I’m quite puzzled. I thought Melbourne would qualify given they have twelve teams.

In a different part of the conversation, the singer openly shared that pop legend Madonna provided assistance to her at an early stage in her professional journey.

Initially, Madonna seemed a bit standoffish towards me, as if she was evaluating me. But eventually, once she got comfortable with me, she turned out to be extremely friendly.

Later on, Katy disclosed that Madonna played a significant role in launching her career by mentioning her song “Ur So Gay” from 2007 during an appearance on the JohnJay and Rich radio program.

In her own words, “That was when she screamed out my song, marking a significant moment in my career – it essentially helped propel me into the limelight,” Katy explained.

When Sarah Harris asked how the star was tested by Madonna, Katy remained mysterious.

‘She just does her Madonna thing,’ Katy said.

“She proposed a party invitation for me, and we were to have a photo session together, an experience I found fantastic. She’s simply outstanding.

Katy continued to heap praise on her role model, mentioning that she remains indebted to Madonna for the paths she paved.

‘Every female [artist] still needs to continue to say thank you to her,’ she said.

‘I’m 40 I still get to do music because of Madonna.’
