Katy O’Brian to star in queer zombie movie Queens of the Dead from Tina Romero
As a hardcore horror fan and avid gamer with a deep appreciation for the genre’s rich history, I’m beyond excited about Tina Romero’s latest project, “Queens of the Dead.” Having grown up watching my dad, George A. Romero, revolutionize the zombie genre, this queer zombie film is a perfect fusion of horror and representation that speaks directly to my soul.
Tina Romero, daughter of the late film director George A. Romero (known for “Bruiser” and “Land of the Dead”), has announced her next project. Entitled “Queens of the Dead,” this horror comedy will feature Katy O’Brian from “Love Lies Bleeding” and several other skilled actors.
Labeled as a unique blend of queer themes and zombie genre, Romero directs “Queens of the Dead,” a film she co-wrote with Erin Judge. Vanishing Angle serves as the production company, while Creativity Capital funds this intriguing project.
A zombie apocalypse unexpectedly occurs at a drag show in Brooklyn, New York, bringing together a diverse group of drag queens, club kids, and former rivals who must unite to stay alive.
In addition to O’Brian, actors including Margaret Cho (“Fire Island”), Brigette Lundy-Paine (“I Saw The TV Glow”), and Cheyenne Jackson (“American Horror Story” and “Call Me Kat”) will feature in the film. Joining them are Nina West (“Rupaul’s Drag Race”), Jaquel Spivey (“Mean Girls”), Tomas Matos (“Fire Island” and “Fantasmas”), Quincy Dunn-Baker (“No Hard Feelings” and “Sharper”), Becca Blackwell (“Bros” and “Survival of the Thickest”), Shaunette Renée Wilson (“Black Panther” and “The Resident”), Dominique Jackson (“Pose”), Riki Lindhome (“Knives Out” and “Wednesday”), and Eve Lindley (“Bros” and “National Anthem”).
At present, it’s uncertain which role each actor will take in the movie. We’ll keep you informed as soon as the character information is disclosed.
Here’s what Romero had to say about the casting for this zombie pic via Deadline:
This is the cast of my wildest dreams. In a movie about survival, you gotta love and root for the survival crew. Every single person in this ensemble brings such a special and specific flavor -both on and off screen. The result is truly a magic sauce.
Natalie Metzger, the maker of “Queens of the Dead,” shared her experience collaborating with Romero on the project: “It was a pleasure working with Romero on this film.”
I’ve been obsessed with this script and Tina’s vision from the moment that I read it. It’s so incredibly fun and unique. This film is not just a continuation of the Romero legacy but a fresh take that is sure to captivate a new generation of horror fans
