Katie Holmes recently honored her former Dawson’s Creek colleague, James Van Der Beek, after he passed away at 48 following a cancer diagnosis announced earlier this year.
I totally grew up watching that show! Dawson and Joey were the main characters, and it was amazing seeing their friendship develop over all six seasons – basically, we watched them go from being kids to adults. They were such a big part of the show!
Katie Holmes wrote a note on Instagram praising actor James Van Der Beek, known for his role in Varsity Blues.

She started by saying, “James, thank you. It’s a special experience to share your creativity – to feel connected while exploring imaginary worlds and knowing we can both express ourselves freely and safely…”
These memories—filled with laughter, talks about life, and the music of James Taylor—capture the spirit of a special time in my life.
She went on to describe him as brave, compassionate, and selfless – a strong person who truly valued life. She saw his life – his beautiful marriage and raising of six children – as a heroic journey, lived with honesty and a creative spirit, recognizing that life itself is a form of art.
I’m deeply saddened by his passing, feeling both the pain of his absence and immense thankfulness for the impact he had on my life.
She shared a heartfelt message, saying it was difficult to find the right words. She expressed her gratitude for having known James and sent her love and support to Kimberly and her children, promising to always be there for them. ❤️
Kimberly Van Der Beek confirmed the passing of her husband, stating he died peacefully on February 11th.
She wrote on Instagram: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning.
He faced his final moments with bravery, strong beliefs, and dignity. We will share more about his hopes, his kindness towards others, and how much he valued every moment when the time is right. Right now, we ask for privacy and peace as we mourn the loss of our beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend.
Before he passed away, Van Der Beek shared his initial thoughts about Katie Holmes, recalling when they first started filming Dawson’s Creek.

While appearing with his co-star Kerr Smith at Steel City Con 2025, he told Parade that he immediately knew Katie would be a hit with audiences, saying, “I met Katie and thought, ‘Everyone in America is going to fall in love with her.’”
He admitted he initially didn’t think the show, now famous, would last very long. He compared it to My So-Called Life, saying he expected it might be a short-lived series that got canceled quickly, and that was actually what he was hoping for.
