Kathy Bates will retire from acting after her stint on CBS' Matlock reboot comes to an end: 'It's my last dance'

As a lifelong admirer of Kathy Bates, it is with a heavy heart that I find myself reflecting on her impending retirement. Having witnessed her transformative performances over five decades, I can only imagine the wealth of untold stories and characters she has yet to bring to life.

Following a celebrated five-decade long acting journey, Kathy Bates announced that she plans to retire once her current CBS show, Matlock, concludes its run.

In the modern adaptation of the original Matlock show (aired from 1986 to 1995 with Andy Griffith as the lead), a 76-year-old actor has taken on the role of Madeline Matlock, a character who was originally male in the original series.

Throughout the course of her illustrious acting career, she’s amassed an Oscar, as well as two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe honors.

In a recent extensive conversation with The New York Times, Bates admitted that she had already been contemplating retirement prior to the arrival of Matlock.

Last year, she disclosed that a film production had led her to ponder retirement… until she received the Matlock script.

She expressed that this talent has become an integral part of her life. At times, she feels envious because of it. This is due to the fact that she finds it hard to suppress it, and all she desires is for her life to revolve around it.

Weeks following her announcement of retirement, her agents unexpectedly delivered the Matlock pilot script to her. To her surprise, she forged a strong bond with the character, Madeline Matlock.

She said that the injustices she faced early on in her career mirror the plight of her title character.

As a lifestyle advisor, I find myself in an unexpected position where years of aspiration, diligence, and relentless determination are now requested of me. It’s exhilarating, yet overwhelming, for I can hardly believe the opportunity before me – a chance to apply all that I’ve worked so hard to achieve. And let me tell you, it’s draining.

Bates firmly declares that the upcoming series on CBS, set to debut on September 22 and spanning 18 episodes, will mark the end of her dancing career,” (or alternatively) “Regarding the new 18-episode series on CBS, which premieres on September 22, Bates emphatically states that it represents the final dance in her career.

As a lifestyle expert, I found myself deeply resonating with the character, as we shared a common thread – channeling our pain through our professions. It was an intimate connection that transcended the screen.

‘Maybe on some deep level that’s why I was attracted to this,’ Bates admitted in the interview.

As a devoted colleague sharing the screen with Skye P. Marshall, I’m delighted to say that her dedication and hard work never cease to impress me. Her professionalism on set is truly commendable.

When given a script, she’ll critically evaluate it by questioning the directors and writers constructively, according to Marshall.

She’s a versatile, stunningly beautiful warrior who possesses great intuition, intelligence, and a strong intolerance for injustice. This was further emphasized.

Despite not necessarily viewing herself this way, the actress found herself tearing up as the interview concluded.

Bates expressed, “Given the state of the world, it feels extravagant for me to be enjoying life’s comforts, like dining in an upscale restaurant, living in a luxurious town, having a prestigious career, and returning home to a fancy house. Yet, I can’t help but wonder, what justification do I have for feeling sorrowful?

Matlock premieres on CBS starting September 22, produced by showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman. Later on, it will be available to stream on Paramount Plus.
