Kathryn Janeway has to be the focus for Kate Mulgrew to return to live-action Star Trek
As a seasoned Star Trek enthusiast with memories etched deep into the cosmos, I must say that Kate Mulgrew’s portrayal of Captain Kathryn Janeway is nothing short of stellar. Her journey, though shorter than some, was no less impactful. She steered the Starship Voyager through uncharted territories, much like I navigated my way through life’s obstacles.
When discussing the pioneering women of Star Trek, it’s hard not to mention Kate Mulgrew. She’s one of the most impactful actresses in the franchise, known for her remarkable role as the leading woman in Star Trek: Voyager. This was the first Star Trek series to air on a network instead of being syndicated, which meant the pressure was immense. Yet, she met the challenge head-on and became one of the most talented actors to carry the Star Trek torch.
While her tenure with the series was comparatively brief compared to the crews from the Original Series and The Next Generation, lasting only seven seasons and a small appearance, many assumed they wouldn’t see Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway again when the 2009 film reboot was released.
Despite initial anticipation, devoted fans who patiently waited for her comeback were richly rewarded in the 2020s when it was announced that Mulgrew would reprise her role as Captain Janeway for Star Trek: Prodigy. This new series, being animated, enabled her to portray the character at any age, a requirement given her role. Nonetheless, she delivered an exceptional performance whether portraying the “younger” Emergency Command Hologram or the seasoned, battle-hardened Admiral Janeway. She truly excelled in both roles.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but yearn for more. Many of us are incessantly querying if she might grace our screens again, this time in live action. The thought isn’t off-putting to her, Mulgrew. However, for such a reunion to materialize, there are certain conditions that need to be met. These conditions seem reminiscent of those set by William Shatner. Unlike a brief cameo, both Shatner and Mulgrew desire their comeback to signify something substantial.
According to Mulgrew, she prefers Janeway to be included in the storyline they are developing. During an interview with TrekMovie, Mulgrew expressed this preference.
She would have to be central to whatever it is that she’s doing. Yes. Absolutely. Otherwise, why bother? She was central for seven years. Why should it change? Right?
In a recent disclosure, Mulgrew disclosed that she had a discussion with Alex Kurtzman, who is in charge of Star Trek. The specifics of their conversation remain undisclosed, but it appears they were discussing potential future roles in the Star Trek universe. If Mulgrew does return, it would likely be in a completely new series, though the exact show has yet to be determined.
Instead of the criticized Star Trek: Picard series, which resembles a “Janeway” series, it might be wiser to steer clear. On the other hand, the concept of a Voyager reunion is more enticing, but not by much. However, we’re unsure about the most effective way to resurrect Captain Janeway, yet we are eager for her return in a live-action role.
And if not, a third season of Prodigy would be just fine.
