Katherine Kelly’s trending crime thriller isn’t even her best show
Without a doubt, being captivated by “The Crow Girl” on Paramount+ (and it’s clear that you are) means finding yourself equally enthralled by Katherine Kelly’s mesmerizing portrayal of psychotherapist Sophia Craven, a role that leaves us all intrigued.
The skillfulness of Kelly shines through in the intricate detail she adds to Sophia within this suspenseful crime novel, where she partners with Eve Myles’s character, DCI Jeanette Kilburn, to unravel the mysteries surrounding the deaths of adolescent boys.
Sophia displays a unique blend of assertiveness, straightforwardness, and reserve, yet she also exhibits gentleness, openness, and empathy. As the connection between Sophia and Myles’ Jeanette progressively intensifies, their evolving relationship becomes increasingly intriguing to follow.
The manner in which Kelly adapts between various traits, contingent upon the circumstance and her feelings, feels effortless – much like Sophia – yet it’s important to note that The Crow Girl isn’t the sole production where Kelly’s acting performance merits a perfect score of 10 out of 10.
If you’ve finished binge-watching the thriller series and are seeking more of Kelly’s captivating acts, here are some of her top-notch performances.
Coronation Street – Becky McDonald (neé Granger)
Kelly’s character, Becky Granger, left an indelible mark on the cobblestones, radiating a lively, disorderly spirit. Becky’s personality was feisty, with a bold streak of rebellion, but her tough exterior concealed a soft core – a heart full of loyalty and pure gold. This quickly endeared her to viewers, making her a beloved figure in the show.
Kelly’s function evolved to highlight her extraordinary versatility, as the character Becky progressed and discarded some of the insecurities that had accumulated over a lifetime within an unsuitable social circle.

As Becky’s character flourished, Kelly was given the opportunity to display her remarkable range, leaving behind certain insecurities she had acquired from years with a questionable peer group.
Over a span of six years on the soap opera “Coronation Street,” Becky found herself adapting to healthier environments and connections that helped her understand her value, which consequently led to ending her relationship with her ex-husband Steve. Kelly’s debut role, in this series, was her first permanent one, and it left a lasting impression.
Gentleman Jack – Elizabeth Sutherland
In a lively and engaging manner, Kelly’s portrayal of Elizabeth Sutherland in “Gentleman Jack” was captivating. There’s an unyielding sense of discomfort and caution embodied by Anne Walker’s elder sister Elizabeth, which Kelly skillfully conveyed through the stiff unease she imbued into the character.
Although Elizabeth possessed all the material comforts considered desirable in the early 1800s, she remained deeply miserable due to the crushing burden of societal expectations and her husband’s constant pressure upon her.
In one of Kelly’s less vocal performances, her ability to convey deep emotion through subtle looks, tight smiles, and delicate gestures is simply stunning.
Mr Selfridge – Lady Mae Loxley
Lady Mae Loxley stood as a formidable presence among the intriguing cast of characters in ‘Mr Selfridge’, and it was Kelly’s captivating portrayal that made her stand out.
Lady Loxley exhibits a subtle yet bold assertiveness, skillfully balancing her high-society persona with a knack for obtaining what she desires in a refined manner. Her charm is a powerful tool that she wields effectively, and Kelly’s portrayal of Loxley showcases an astute, cunning intelligence veiled by a playful, poised demeanor. Always on the lookout for opportunities, Loxley pounces without delay, creating a captivating and intriguing character.
The Long Shadow – Emily Jackson
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel a chill down my spine when I reflect on the intense role Kelly, the talented actress, took on. She breathed life into Emily Jackson, the tragic victim of the Yorkshire Ripper, in the gripping thriller The Long Shadow. It was an extraordinary performance that left a lasting impression on me.
Kelly vividly portrayed Emily, a mother of two, who resorted to sex work due to financial struggles. The weight of her situation was palpable not just in Kelly’s actions but also in the melancholic tone of her voice. Her sorrow permeated throughout the performance, lingering until her poignant finale.
Mr Bates vs the Post Office – Angela van den Bogerd
Playing the character of Angela van den Bogerd, a businesswoman, in “Mr Bates vs The Post Office” was one of Kelly’s roles that wasn’t particularly sympathetic, yet it demonstrates the vast expanse of her acting talent and versatility.
In a disastrous scandal that significantly impacted numerous postal workers’ lives and finances, Angela, a high-ranking employee at the Post Office, hindered the investigation during court hearings by providing misleading testimony.
Angela exuded self-assuredness, yet her eagerness to assist hints at a certain wariness that may prove beneficial in securing this position.
Criminal – Natalie Hobbs
Sharing screen time with David Tennant, Kelly took on the character of Detective Chief Inspector Natalie Hobbs. This role particularly sparkled when she confronted suspect Stacey, portrayed by Hayley Atwell, during interrogations.
In a subtle yet potent manner, Natalie’s gaze radiates persistence and unwavering resolve as she delves into her suspect in search of the truth. Yet, there is a hint of empathy and kindness from Kelly that adds depth to the character. What makes Natalie’s performance captivating is her innate ability to utilize her intuition effectively, resulting in a quietly powerful portrayal.
Liar – Karen Renton
In a new police procedural series, Kelly took on the role of Detective Karen Renton. Her portrayal of Karen was rough-edged and prioritized efficiency over popularity. There’s an understated, relaxed aloofness in her performance as Karen that sets it apart from her more emotionally charged performance in Criminal.
Karen gradually builds up the intensity, nudging her suspects step by step towards an explosive response. Her questioning techniques effectively heightened the suspense in each scene, and Kelly excelled at creating such tension-filled moments.
Happy Valley – Jodie Shackleton
Kelly became DI Jodie Shackleton in the second season of Happy Valley, teaming up with others to pursue a murderer. The actress skillfully portrayed a character struggling to demonstrate that her police role was not influenced by nepotism, as her father holds a high rank as Chief Constable.
In Kelly’s pursuit of the truth, she skillfully combined empathy, gravity, and curiosity.
