Katee Sackhoff recently revealed some surprising and deeply personal insights about portraying Bo-Katan Kryze in live-action, during an episode of her talk show, The Sackhoff Show. On this program, she frequently invites Star Wars actors for engaging conversations.
In simpler terms, Katee Sackhoff admitted that after working on The Mandalorian, she struggled with feeling connected to the character Bo-Katan. She explained, “Bo-Katan is unlike me as a person in many ways – her motivations, life choices. I found it difficult to grasp her personality. As much as I could comprehend her, I never felt an emotional resonance with her. I couldn’t relate to her. I didn’t know how to bring her to life authentically. It was challenging for me.
What’s particularly striking about Sackhoff’s revelations is that she lent her voice to Bo-Katan in both “The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels.” In “The Mandalorian,” she played Kryze in live action for the first time, with Sackhoff being the sole actor Star Wars considered for the role. It’s puzzling that she found her character unidentifiable, given Bo has consistently been the same throughout the canon. Interestingly, in “The Mandalorian,” Bo-Katan was able to break free from a cycle of gaining power and then losing it-a cycle marked by her reclaiming the Darksaber, the Mandalorian throne, and her planet.

It appears that Sackhoff may have struggled to identify with her character or collaborate with the team, though she didn’t disclose if she shared her reservations with Jon Favreau and others on The Mandalorian crew. Making her live-action debut during season 2, Sackhoff was warmly welcomed, and the episode was successful. In season 3, she became a co-lead alongside Pedro Pascal, which could have been where her challenges began as she wasn’t ready to headline a series with such a massive fanbase. She expresses, “It all just shattered my confidence, making me question everything about myself.
Despite Katee’s confessional statements being unsettling and suggesting self-criticism, pinpointing the root of her insecurity is challenging. Was it the script, the directorial choices, or imposter syndrome that troubled Katee during her portrayal of Bo-Katan? As an actor, it’s part of the profession to embody characters unlike themselves in real life, and there should be no judgment for such performance differences. I suspect that season 3 of The Mandalorian did not meet expectations due to several factors.
In my perspective, I anticipated an intense rivalry between Bo-Katan and Din Djarin, as well as a reference to Duchess Satine Kryze in the storyline. I assumed that the darksaber would be instrumental to the plot, but surprisingly, it was barely touched upon. Personally, I believe Katee Sackhoff delivered an exceptional portrayal of Bo-Katan during season 2, and it may have provided her a sense of fulfillment if her character had undergone a genuine redemption arc that felt deserved. However, the plot unexpectedly bypassed this, as Bo was simply bestowed with the Darksaber and welcomed unquestioningly by all Mandalorians, including The Armorer.
Judging by her past roles, it’s questionable if we’ll see Katee Sackhoff portray Bo-Katan Kryze in live-action any time soon. Perhaps it would be best for a character like Bo to continue appearing in animated form.
The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+.
