Kate Winslet admits she hid her stress levels about finances and fatigue from co-stars including Helen Mirren during directorial debut for son Joe’s Netflix movie Goodbye June

Kate Winslet has revealed she kept her concerns about tiredness and money issues to herself while directing her first film, Goodbye June, which features her son.

I’m so excited for her! The actress, who’s 50, is now directing – it’s her very first time! She’s made her directorial debut with this lovely family drama on Netflix, and I can’t wait to see what she’s created.

Kate’s 21-year-old son, Joe Anders, wrote the screenplay for the movie, and it will be available to stream this Friday.

The change was a big step for Kate, pushing her beyond what she was used to, but she kept her concerns to herself, especially her tiredness, not sharing them with colleagues like Helen Mirren.

She told Grazia magazine that the most challenging aspect was setting aside her own worries to ensure the actors never sensed them.

I had to stay positive and lead the way each day, no matter how tired or stressed I was about money.

Honestly, it just kills me that even someone as incredible as her is aware of being seen differently on set just because she’s a woman! It’s like, can’t people just appreciate her talent without making it about gender? She’s said she’s very aware of how she’s perceived compared to the guys, and it’s just… frustrating. She’s amazing, period, and it bothers me so much that she even has to think about this stuff!

She pointed out that when male actors become directors, it’s usually met with curiosity, but when women do, they often face skepticism and are expected to prove themselves.

Kate appears in the film Goodbye June with Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Timothy Spall, and Andrea Riseborough.

Despite the pressures behind the screen, Kate said she would ‘really, really love to direct again’.

Kate and her son, Joe, made a rare public appearance together on Monday at the New York premiere of Goodbye June.

I was so impressed with Kate and Joe’s style last night at the Whitby Hotel! Kate looked absolutely stunning in a classic black dress, and Joe really pulled off a bold checkered suit. They were there celebrating a fellow actor’s first time directing – and the film is coming out this Friday, so keep an eye out for it!

Joe, the son of film director Sam Mendes, is known professionally as Anders. He chose this stage name after his parents, Kate and Sam, separated in 2010.

It will be difficult for him to dismiss claims of nepotism, especially since he recently acted with his mother in the World War II movie, Lee.

Joe has also appeared in the Oscar-nominated war film 1917, which was directed by his father.

The actress is also mother to her daughter Mia, 24, and son Bear Blaze, 11.

I recently chatted with Kate on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and she shared what it’s really like working with family – specifically, her son! It was fascinating to hear her perspective on blending work and motherhood.

Once the script was finished, my plan was to produce the film, star as Julia, and then find a director to bring it all to life.

I realized I couldn’t hand the project over. I told him I’d love to direct it myself, explaining that a director naturally makes a story their own – and that’s how it should be. But I didn’t want that to happen with his work; I wanted to protect his vision.

I hoped he would stay involved and get to see the wonderful thing he built become a reality.

As a lifestyle expert, I can tell you, having someone incredibly knowledgeable by your side makes all the difference. Working with this particular person, who really gets film, was an absolute joy and a huge asset to my daily work.
