Kate Ritchie teases Home and Away return after 16 years as she reveals producers have already been in touch

As a dedicated follower of Home and Away, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia upon hearing that Kate Ritchie might be returning to Summer Bay after sixteen long years. The image of Sally Fletcher, a character I grew up with, walking down those familiar streets again is both exciting and bittersweet.

Kate Ritchie hinted at a possible comeback to Home and Away, which has been airing on Channel Seven for sixteen years since her departure from the popular soap opera.

46-year-old Nova radio host subtly suggested a possible comeback of her long-time character Sally Fletcher, whom she portrayed for two decades between 1988 and 2008 on TV.

She’s disclosed that producers have reached out to her several times with plans for her comeback, yet she hinted that she hasn’t definitively ruled out the possibility of returning to the soap opera.

She shared with the Herald Sun that she’s no longer receiving calls, but they’ve made it clear the opportunity remains available whenever she’s ready.

Going back to that place, reuniting with everyone, and collaborating with the actors once more isn’t a prospect I’d reject outright. It’s more about whether it still holds relevance or purpose.

Kate expressed doubts about whether her character would mesh well with the more recent inhabitants of Summer Bay, or if she’d continue to resonate with viewers.

‘All of the new viewers they have, half of them would not know who Sally is. I have my work cut out for me and parenthood and life generally, let alone throwing another job,’ she added.

In 1988, at the tender age of eight, I found myself stepping into the limelight, taking on the role of Sally Fletcher in the enduring Australian soap opera, Home and Away. It was an experience that would shape my life in countless ways.

For two decades, she was the lead actress on the show, and since then, she’s confessed that it was challenging for her to establish her personal identity separate from her cherished role.

As a devoted admirer, I might say: Even though Kate garnered two Gold Logie awards during her tenure, she openly admitted that she still grappled with doubts about her self-worth before.

In December 2017, Kate mentioned to Stellar that people sought her out due to Sally, she also pointed out that she received awards and invitations to prestigious events thanks to Sally as well.

When something has been such an integral part of your life that its absence leaves you questioning, “What aspect of myself draws others in?

Eventually, Kate chose to undergo therapy as a means of managing her difficulties. In an interview with TV Week in March 2021, she explained, ‘It truly felt like the loss of a significant aspect of my identity.’

After departing from “Home and Away”, Kate has primarily focused on radio work rather than continuing her acting career, which she has only occasionally ventured into. Instead, she has achieved notable success in the radio industry.

2008 saw her secure a minor part in the second installment of Underbelly, making an appearance in two episodes. This was followed by her leading role in the 2010 police series produced by Nine, titled Cops L.A.C. (Law and Order: Criminal Intent Australia).

Ever since, I’ve poured most of my energy into the realm of radio, sharing the microphone every morning on Nova 96.9’s hit breakfast show, Fitzy and Wippa alongside Kate Ritchie.
