Kate Mulgrew asks fans if they will campaign for a season three for Star Trek: Prodigy

As a die-hard Star Trek fan and someone who has followed the Prodigy series since its inception, I cannot express enough my gratitude for the dedication and perseverance of the fans who rallied to bring this brilliant show back to life after its cancellation from Paramount+. The release of season two on Netflix was a triumphant moment for us all, and it did not disappoint – it was undeniably one of the best Star Trek seasons yet, both in terms of Prodigy itself and the broader Star Trek universe.

Fans of Star Trek: Prodigy, whose excitement had been mounting since its unexpected cancellation by Paramount+, finally got the chance to unwind on July 1st with the release of the show’s second season on Netflix. Many devoted viewers played a significant role in bringing the series to the streaming platform after its untimely end. Their efforts paid off handsomely, as they were rewarded with a superior season that more than justified their investment of time. This installment of Star Trek: Prodigy easily ranks among the best the franchise has ever produced. With the cliffhanger ending of season two leaving many questions unanswered, speculation is already swirling about the possibility of a third season. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Netflix grants us more adventures with the Prodigy crew!

At Star Trek: Prodigy’s panel during San Diego Comic Con, Kate Mulgrew emphasized that the success of the show’s second season relied on fan engagement. She recalled how a plane was hired to fly over Netflix’s headquarters to demonstrate their dedication, and she urged fans to join in once more.

You guys [indicating the crowd] are responsible for season 2 because you hired that little plane that flew over Netflix and that got bought two weeks later, or something like that. So you have to do it again. Will you do it again?

Kate Mulgrew

Mulgrew confessed that she shed tears during the reunion scene between her role as Admiral Kate Janeway and Robert Beltran’s Captain Janeway on Prodigy. She praised the Hageman brothers, Kevin and Dan, for their genius in creating this storyline. The brothers shared their intention of forming the worst crew and transforming them into the best, but they acknowledged that this hasn’t been achieved just yet, which is why season three is necessary.

The fervent supporters of Prodigy, including its creators and actors, share a common desire for the animated series to persist. As Mulgrew puts it, “there’s no other animated television quite like this.” And she’s correct. Originally centered around a group of misfit youngsters stealing the Protostar, Prodigy evolved into an invaluable tool for introducing newcomers to Star Trek. It has cultivated a devoted fanbase, and through its Netflix renewal process, these fans can be considered as the pioneers, eagerly paving the way for season three’s voyage.
