Kate Hudson reveals why she’s done with rom-coms as she finally earns another Oscar nod

After receiving an Oscar nomination for her performance in the musical drama Song Sung Blue, Kate Hudson is excited about pursuing a wider range of acting projects.

Though she received an Oscar nomination for her memorable performance in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, the 46-year-old actress has often been seen as someone who only plays roles in romantic comedies.

Kate Hudson is known for popular romantic comedies like ‘Bride Wars’ and ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,’ but she’s now looking to take on different kinds of roles and move beyond that genre.

She explained to The Hollywood Reporter that the industry consistently hired her for specific types of roles, and her aim was always to deliver the strongest possible performance within those parameters.

I began to feel like I needed a change. Once you become well-known for a specific type of role, it can be difficult for directors to imagine you playing anything else, she explained.

It really bothers me when people say she doesn’t transform – because honestly, that’s exactly what I adore about her work! It’s the core of why I’m such a dedicated fan.

Hudson confessed she sometimes took romantic comedy roles simply because the pay was good and she needed to support her child as a single mother.

Last December, Kate Hudson mentioned to Entertainment Weekly that she was hoping to shift her career focus after spending many years starring in romantic comedies.

She shared that she’s discovered her passion for comedy over time. While she enjoys romantic comedies, she noted they’re difficult to do well, which means she often has to decline projects.

She explained she was eager to collaborate with talented directors and explore new creative directions, adding that it’s what truly brings her joy.

Some of my most enjoyable acting roles are actually lesser-known projects, but they’ve been incredibly rewarding experiences – like my work on ‘Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon’.

The movie Song Sung Blue tells the real-life story of Mike and Claire Sardina, a married couple who performed as a tribute act to Neil Diamond called Lightning and Thunder.

It was written, produced, and directed by Craig Brewer, who helmed the 2011 remake of Footloose.

Hudson plays the role of Claire in the movie, a performance that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Hugh Jackman stars as Mike.

The pair, who both had success in the music industry, sing all the music in the film.

Hudson’s music career has been gaining momentum lately. She released her album, Glorious, in 2024.

Last year, she made an appearance on The Voice as an advisor on Adam Levine’s team.

Besides his music career, including the song “Song Sung Blue”, Hudson is now the main actor in the Netflix sports comedy series, “Running Point”.

Hudson shot to fame playing rock ‘n’ roll groupie Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous.

Throughout the 2000s, she became a popular actress in romantic comedies, starring in films like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Le Divorce, Bride Wars, Something Borrowed, and Fool’s Gold.
