Kate Garraway reveals her daughter Darcey received her A-level results on her late dad Derek’s birthday and says she ‘knows he would be proud of her’ seven months after his death

On Saturday, Kate Garraway commended her daughter Darcey’s A-level scores, expressing that she surpassed expectations, given the challenging circumstances, which include being seven months after the passing of her father, Derek Draper.
18-year-old me, your diehard fan, finally got my exam results unveiled on Thursday, and let me tell you, it was a tough journey this past year for us. But when Good Morning Britain’s shining star, Darcey, saw what I had accomplished, she graciously acknowledged that “I did the best I could.” What an understatement from someone as inspiring as her!
Notable celebrity parents, such as Amanda Holden and Peter Jones, have also commended their children for their impressive A-level results.
In a heartfelt message, I couldn’t help but express that I believe Derek would stand tall with pride, witnessing the accomplishments of our dear daughter. Today, we made a special journey to his resting place, eager to share with him, face-to-face, the news of her latest achievements.
In January, Derek passed away at the age of 56, having fought for four years against the lasting impacts of Covid-19, which he had caught in 2020.
On Instagram yesterday, Kate posted: “Bravo to everyone who received their #Alevel results this week! A significant accomplishment. If you’re not thrilled with your grades, don’t worry – remember, you’ve reached the finish line and life has a remarkable ability to sort things out for the best.”
As a seasoned teacher who has witnessed countless students navigate the ups and downs of academic life, I must say that Darcey’s resilience and determination are truly inspiring. This year, she aced another milestone on Derek’s birthday, which is an achievement in itself. But what sets her apart from others is not just the grades she gets but how she handles adversity.
I am as proud as can be of her, and I’m certain her father would feel the same. Before she set off to celebrate with friends, we visited her dad’s grave to share the news with him first.
I’ve been at home and just realized that the roses I planted specifically for Derek using @itv @loveyourgarden have suddenly started blooming! All summer long, they didn’t flower, but now they’re in full bloom so we can wheel him outside to enjoy their scent.
I vividly remember the sweet aroma of mint mingling with the warm scent of tea as I raised my cup to Derek – a moment of joy and pride that will forever be etched in my memory. As a mother who has walked this journey herself, I know all too well the love and guidance that goes into raising a child. Today, as Derek’s daughter embarks on her next life stage, I can’t help but feel that Derek’s legacy lives on through her. The love he poured into his daughter will continue to guide and inspire her, just as it has shaped the person she is today. It’s a testament to the power of parental love and guidance, and a reminder that even when we may no longer be physically present, our impact can continue to ripple through the lives of those we hold dear.
