As someone who has followed Kate Garraway‘s journey over the past few years, I can’t help but feel a deep admiration for her strength and resilience. Winning the Authored Documentary award at the National Television Awards for the third time is truly a testament to her dedication and passion for storytelling, particularly in sharing Derek’s story.

On a thrilling Thursday, I couldn’t contain my excitement as I stepped out for some errands, clutching tightly to the triumphant gong I’d just been awarded at the National Television Awards – an unforgettable experience that happened mere hours prior!

On Wednesday evening, the presenter from Google My Business, aged 57, was honored with the Authored Documentary award for the third time. This recognition came for her exceptional work titled “Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.

On Thursday, she wore a white and black striped cardigan with baggy blue jeans and white boots.

She wore a brown leather bag across her body and hung a black leather bag from her wrist, finishing her look with silver hoops.

Derek’s Tale narrates the final months of Kate’s spouse, Derek Draper, who passed away in January at the age of 56 following his contraction of COVID-19 in 2020.

On stage to receive her award, Kate was accompanied by her children Darcey (age 18) and Billy (age 15), who are both hers and Derek’s.

She began her moving speech: ‘This is a bittersweet one isn’t it? It’s very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy.

I assured them that it wasn’t necessary for them to speak up. To be precise, we’ve reached the midpoint of our initial year, which is filled with numerous first experiences.

Experiencing my first Easters and first birthdays without Derek feels quite unusual. It’s odd being at the Television Awards for the first time without him by my side.

Back when I was gracing the screens in Kate Garraway’s heartfelt documentaries, Finding Derek (2021) and Caring for Derek (2022), I was the one shining brightly under the spotlight.

On the eve of the National Television Awards, Kate recalled her 20th wedding anniversary with Derek.

She said on Instagram: ‘Today would’ve been my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek.

Today marks our 20th wedding anniversary with Derek, and it’s one of those special occasions, similar to Christmas or Easter, that we’ve often discussed. These significant dates carry an emotional weight, like the punch to the stomach I feel today on account of his birthday.

Specifically, I’ve found myself wallowing in self-pity, as it’s a deeply private matter.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d like to highlight a unique aspect in comparison to others. While they often prioritize family and friends, this particular day holds an exceptional significance for me.

His absence really hits me hard, and it feels as if a loud, continuous train is missing from the station, making me feel incredibly sad. (Alternatively, “His absence is like a deafening train that’s gone, leaving me feeling very sad.”)

I’ve been embracing my grief, just like others advise, and I’ve found solace in rereading some heartwarming anniversary messages he wrote me on old cards. It’s a blessing to have experienced such beautiful romance and love in my life; I truly consider myself fortunate.

On Thursday morning, Kate returned to the helm of Good Morning Britain and discussed her win.

She remarked that the documentary was a heartfelt tribute to Derek, as it told his personal story. The production company did an exceptional job in creating it, not just for Derek but also for all caregivers everywhere.

It’s reassuring to hear that Susanna thought the speech was beautiful, as it felt so surreal to me that I even questioned whether I made any sense after leaving the stage.

‘Because, it’s such a strange moment and the children were lovely, so thank you.’

“Kate concluded: ‘It’s intended for the caregivers, those who require assistance due to vulnerability, as well as the remarkable professionals who offer this care.’
