Kate Garraway details the horrific impact her fake AI boyfriend has had on her grieving children two years after husband Derek Draper’s death

Kate Garraway initially dismissed the online rumors and photos of a fake AI boyfriend, finding the whole idea amusing.

The Good Morning Britain presenter was upset when untrue stories began to hurt her children, who were already dealing with a loss.

Around the anniversary of her husband Derek Draper’s passing, Kate Garraway was targeted by a cruel hoax involving an AI-generated image of her with a stranger.

Kate’s ex-partner, Derek, died in January 2024 at the age of 56 after contracting Covid-19. He was the father of her two children, Darcey, 19, and William, 16.

Two years after her son Derek passed away, Kate has shared that the AI bots went too far by creating a false article claiming he was unhappy with their relationship.

Kate described a shocking moment while reading the article. She said a specific detail – that her son was unhappy and wanted to break up with his partner – completely stopped her in her tracks.

According to reports, the relationship is likely to fail because Kate’s son disapproves and wants her to break up with her partner.

On top of everything Bill was already dealing with – the challenges of being a teenager, stress about exams, and grieving his father – he now felt like he was being made out to be a hindrance to his mother’s happiness and someone who only thought of himself.

Writing in her column for The Sun, Kate insisted William is the opposite to how he was described.

Kate recently discussed a fabricated story about a boyfriend on Good Morning Britain. She explained that around the anniversary of her husband Derek’s death, someone used AI to create a picture of her with a stranger, leading to false rumors about her dating someone new.

‘It’s completely untrue, the picture is fabricated. I’ll tell you the impact of that in a moment.’

Around a year ago, shortly after Derek died – a very difficult time for me and the kids – strange things began happening on Facebook.

I don’t use Facebook. There are so many fake accounts pretending to be Kate Garraway that they almost felt like people were creating fan pages for me.

I didn’t realize anything was happening until strangers started telling me on the street that they were happy I’d found someone.

I wasn’t upset at the time. I actually found it touching that they were so thoughtful, especially considering they were also dealing with loss, and we had some really nice talks.

Kate shared the sad news of her husband Derek’s passing on Instagram, writing a heartfelt message: ‘Rest peacefully, my love. I felt so fortunate to have had you in my life.’ They had been married for 18 years.

The pair married in September 2005 after they started dating in 2004.
