Jasmine Stefanovic has weighed in on a hot-button topic.
Jasmine Stefanovic, a shoe designer and wife of Today show host Karl Stefanovic, spoke out on Thursday about the recent discussions surrounding activist Grace Tame.
This week, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced criticism after referring to child sexual abuse survivor Grace Tame as ‘difficult’. The comment sparked a strong negative reaction from the public.
Jasmine left a comment on a post from Marie Claire Australia about the recent issue.
The magazine noted that when the Prime Minister called Grace Tame “difficult,” it repeated a common way society has historically dismissed strong, assertive women.
The author explained that when people describe women as “difficult,” it’s rarely a simple observation. It’s often a quick judgment – a way to label a woman who is honest and assertive rather than polite and agreeable, especially if she doesn’t prioritize avoiding awkwardness.
Tame was among the social media users who liked the post.
Jasmine didn’t seem to care much for the publication’s opinion and instead shared her own very critical response.
I was really surprised by the reaction to that situation! Someone commented, ‘Wow, is that a joke? She got off lightly!’ and it clearly resonated with a lot of people – it had already gotten 22 likes by Thursday evening. It just shows how strongly people felt about it.
On Thursday, Albanese quickly changed his stance on his earlier remark about Grace Tame, attempting to present it in a different light after calling her ‘difficult’.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe what happened! Our Prime Minister was at this amazing summit, the Future Victoria thing, and they did this incredible challenge! Seriously, they asked him questions, but he could only answer with one word! One word! It was the most intense, fascinating thing I’ve ever seen – I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! I can’t stop thinking about it!
When asked to describe Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, named Australian of the Year in 2021, Anthony Albanese simply said, ‘Difficult.’
When questioned about the remark, the Prime Minister attempted to explain it by saying it was about the challenges in Tame’s personal life, and quickly added that they were sorry if it came across differently.
He made the statement after an ABC News reporter questioned whether he found all women challenging, or specifically Ms. Tame.
‘I was asked to describe people in one word, and Grace Tame, you certainly can’t describe in one word,’ Albanese explained.
‘She has had a difficult life, and that was what I was referring to.
Grace Tame transformed a challenging personal experience into powerful advocacy work, and that’s why she deservedly received the Australian of the Year Award.
‘If there was any misinterpretation, then I certainly apologise.
Grace Tame has transformed her deeply personal and traumatic experience into a force for good, especially for young women. She’s become a powerful and courageous advocate by openly sharing her story and speaking out.
I also disagree with some of the language Grace Tame used during the Sydney demonstration.
That’s why you can’t really capture someone’s whole personality with just a single word, and I didn’t intend for anyone to think you could.
‘It was certainly just a word that comes to mind when different people are mentioned.’
Tame responded on Thursday by sharing a post from Harrison James, a survivor and advocate against sexual abuse, which strongly criticized Albanese.
Mr. James posted a photo with Ms. Tame, writing that when a man calls a woman ‘difficult,’ he really means she won’t do what he wants. History, however, often remembers those women as brave.
He added: ‘Love you, Grace Tame. Thank you for refusing to be anything but brave.’
Regular Australians were deeply upset by the comment, calling it a betrayal and urging Prime Minister Albanese to improve his performance.
Tame recently faced criticism after leading a chant of ‘Globalise the Intifada’ at a Sydney protest against Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit.
The act caused many people to demand that the award given to the former Australian of the Year be revoked.
