Karl Stefanovic Finally Gets Green Light for Dream Mansion Upgrade

Karl Stefanovic and his wife, Jasmine, secured a significant victory in their efforts to construct their dream home permanently on the north shore of Sydney.

50-year-old host of The Today Show and his 40-year-old shoe designer wife have received approval for updated blueprints concerning their $4.5 million high-end residence, following a hearing at the Land and Environment Court.

I, being utterly captivated and passionate about architecture, embarked on an ambitious project: tearing down the iconic ’60s residence nestled in the exclusive neighborhood of Castlecrag, mere kilometers from the city center, to construct a grand four-tier dwelling boasting five spacious bedrooms.

On Wednesday, the court endorsed a revised layout for the house, reducing it to just two floors.

Stefanovic and his wife purchased the property for $3.2million in 2021.

In March 2024, the long-awaited approval for their renovation came from Willoughby Council, following a year-long dispute over their initial development proposal.

The altered Design Approval document, which the couple presented in February, had been submitted following the initiation of demolition work back in December.

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to sit down for a constructive meeting with representatives from Willoughby Council in what they call a ‘conciliation conference’. It was an insightful experience where we addressed and discussed matters of mutual concern in a positive and collaborative manner.

As per the report, a neighbor had expressed concerns regarding excessive light reflection (or brightness) coming from the rooftop in the updated construction.

In my professional opinion, the decision made was that the suggested adjustment is essentially identical to the initial approval given.

The changes made to the Stefanovics’ dream house are that it now has four bedrooms, rather than five, and it consists of two floors, not three.

Their design for their fresh home encompasses an outdoor swimming pool, hot tub, open-air dining spot, and a two-car garage (previously intended as a three-car garage).

The decision came after Stefanovic first lodged a DA with the council in March 2023.

As an attentive neighbor, I found myself facing a mix of worries when learning about my neighbors’ plans. Among these were concerns about potential loss of scenic vistas and the impact of solar panel reflections.

According to the legal representatives of the well-known duo, the renovation project largely adhered to the planning regulations established by Willoughby Council.

Yet, it failed to meet the floor plan space ratio requirements that align with local zoning laws.

The initial plan for the couple was to build a living area spanning approximately 102 square meters underground.

Constructed back in the 1960s, the former residence that was entirely demolished earlier, previously boasted panoramic vistas of Castlecrag’s northern cliffside.

The final layout of the property, as depicted in the blueprint, boasts a breathtaking modern aesthetic, expansive living areas, large French-style windows, and a captivating indoor spiral staircase.

In this version, I’ve tried to use more descriptive adjectives and simpler sentence structures while maintaining the original meaning.

The area will feature an attractive outdoor dining space equipped with steps nearby, along with stunning architectural details such as tall ceilings and angled windows.

In December Karl informed his Instagram followers that demolition work had started on the site.

Karl and Jasmine, along with their children, divide their time between Sydney and Queensland.

Apart from Harper, Karl is also a father to three elder kids – Jackson (age 24), Willow (age 19), and River (age 17). They are the offspring of his marriage with Cassandra Thorburn.

Jasmine’s family are based in the Sunshine State, while Karl began his journalism career there.

The couple married in December 2018 in San José del Cabo, Mexico.
