Karen Huger, known from “The Real Housewives of Potomac,” says she’s made significant positive changes in her life after a drunk-driving accident involving her Maserati almost two years ago.
Okay, so I was catching Sherri Shepherd’s show today, and Karen Huger – you know, the ‘Grand Dame’ from Real Housewives – finally talked about her DUI arrest from earlier this year and the six months she spent in county jail. Honestly, she seemed really relieved and at peace, saying she’s just so glad to have gotten through it and be on the other side of all that drama.
In March 2024, Maryland police arrested Huger for drunk driving after she had a car accident in Potomac, hitting both a street divider and a tree. She was later convicted of reckless driving and, in February 2025, received a one-year jail sentence. Huger was released in September after serving six months at the Montgomery County Detention Center in Maryland.

“I healed myself, so thank you,” she continued, “but the inside is what matters.”
Gizelle Bryant recently shared how a car accident in 2024 forced her to deal with her problems with alcohol. After the crash, she explained that she had been drinking due to the pain of losing her mother and warned others to be aware of their feelings before getting behind the wheel. She now says the incident was her way of avoiding the pain of grief and her addiction, and admitted she hadn’t been listening to her faith.
Huger explained to Shepherd that before the car accident, she was secretly struggling with alcohol while filming “Real Housewives of Potomac,” and now regrets that behavior.
Looking back at the accident, I have to admit I was completely mistaken in my initial assessment. Honestly, I’m just incredibly thankful that no one else was harmed – it easily could have been much worse. The fact that I walked away from it all is something I don’t take for granted for a second; it really hit home how close I came to losing everything.
The reality TV star shared that her six months in jail, without the usual cameras and luxuries, actually helped her grow as a person and feel more in control of her life. She used the time to get treatment for her alcohol addiction, continuing with therapy even while incarcerated. She also took a leadership role by running Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for other inmates.

Earlier this month, Luann de Lesseps discussed the recent controversy with Andy Cohen, admitting she hadn’t fully processed her grief and struggled with addiction. She shared with both Cohen and on the show “Sherri” that she’s focusing on her sobriety day by day. She also said that her two adult children are a big reason she’s committed to staying sober.
The “Real Housewives of Potomac” star, wanting to move past her DUI arrest, remembered looking at her two adult children “through a glass window” while in jail and realizing how much she had hurt them.
She admitted she hadn’t considered the other people’s feelings, and made it clear this wouldn’t happen again.

Sherri Shepherd finally spoke about her show being cancelled, saying better times are ahead. She also playfully warned guests not to take anything from the set now that it’s ending.
Karen Huger hasn’t decided if she’ll be back on “The Real Housewives of Potomac” for future seasons. While she was largely absent during the most recent season due to a sentence, she did make an appearance in the finale. Huger and the rest of the cast are reuniting for a three-part reunion special that starts airing this Sunday.
After the scandal became public, Karen Huger explained to Shepherd that she feels like herself, but with a fresh start. She’s also embracing the nickname fans have given her, ‘Grand Dame,’ even after everything that happened.
“If they want me to be their Grand Dame, no one else could do it anyway.”
