In the closing moments of the movie “Karate Kid: Legends,” William Zabka once again takes on the role of Johnny Lawrence, linking the film series to the follow-up series “Cobra Kai.” The original Karate Kid trilogy’s protagonist, Daniel LaRusso, plays a significant role in “Karate Kid: Legends.” In a turn of events, Mr. Han seeks Daniel’s aid when he decides to mentor his student Li for the Five Boroughs Tournament. The film ends with a pizza (and a token of gratitude) being sent from New York to Daniel, who is back in Reseda.

As it happens, Daniel is spending time with Johnny, who playfully ridicules the notion of shipping a pizza from New York to California, implying Raseda’s pizzas are superior. Seizing the moment, Johnny humorously proposes a line of Mr. Miyagi-themed pizzerias on the West Coast, labeling it a “million-dollar idea.” Daniel laughs it off, but seems slightly irritated by the suggestion, hinting at their dynamic in the final episode of Cobra Kai and suggesting that the show aligns with the current film series.

At the grand unveiling of our movie in New York City, I had the pleasure of chatting with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant. During our conversation, I, as the director of Legends, shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes story about how we filmed a special cameo and managed to keep it under wraps:

“Well, Liam, let me spill the beans on this one secret we’ve been guarding. Filming that cameo was quite the challenge! We had to be extremely tactful and discreet to ensure the surprise remained intact. It wasn’t easy, but I must say it was worth every bit of effort when we finally pulled it off!

The task proved incredibly challenging for us. For the film, we constructed a completely new house in Miyagi style specifically, and this was the sole location where we worked alongside Billy. To ensure his presence remained discreet, we secreted him away almost inside Miyagi’s own closet. Upon commencing shooting, we would bring in the crew, and with a subtle cue, we’d let Billy emerge. Then Ralph appeared, and they interacted marvelously, as they had done on their TV show. Much of it was improvised, with us adding catchy lines that Billy eagerly delivered.

At the very same gathering, Ralph Macchio likewise spoke about the scene and, having initially been uncertain if he could participate, expressed his joy for having Zabka as part of the movie.

Indeed, it was quite challenging to maintain the secrecy. To be honest, I wasn’t certain he would participate, but his enthusiasm was infectious. He truly feels like family to me now. We’ve grown incredibly close over the years. If someone had told me this 15 years ago, I might have laughed it off. But we were always friendly, and now he’s one of my closest friends. His portrayal in Cobra Kai is outstanding, and here, he pays tribute to the iconic Johnny Lawrence with a nod. It’s wonderful to see him involved.

Unlike Daniel, who swiftly bonded with Mr. Han, the blunt and outspoken Johnny might find it challenging to establish a rapport with the venerable kung fu master, adding an interesting dynamic to their potential relationship.

In a potential new chapter for The Karate Kid series, Johnny’s disciples might encounter an intriguing adversary in Daniel’s student, Li Fong from Cobra Kai. A possible approach to introduce Johnny in the story could be by placing him alongside Victor, the proprietor of a pizzeria and Mia’s love interest’s father. Victor, formerly a boisterous professional boxer who retired voluntarily, is quite different from the karate champion Johnny who was forced out of the sport.
