Kanye West accused of not paying security guard for doomed Malibu construction project in lawsuit

As a seasoned real estate investor with decades of experience under my belt, I must say Kanye West’s latest project leaves me scratching my head more than a Rubik’s Cube. This isn’t just a property, it’s a multi-million dollar home in an upscale Southern California beach town, and turning it into a ‘bomb shelter’ or a ‘Bat Cave’ seems like a questionable decision.

Kanye West is being sued by a former security guard, Jonathan Monroe, who alleges that the musician failed to compensate him for the time he spent working for him. Furthermore, Monroe claims that after requesting payment, he was terminated from his position.

According to documents examined by TMZ on Tuesday, Monroe stated that West (aged 47) informed him in August of 2021 that he would compensate him with a rate of $30 per hour for security services at a Malibu, California property West had attempted to refurbish, but ultimately failed.

In legal documents, Monroe stated that he put in between 36 to 50 hours per week on work for the Grammy-winning artist. However, his career has faced a decline due to a series of anti-Semitic comments he’s made since late 2022.

In October 2021, Monroe informed the court that he hadn’t received a single cent for his efforts and hours worked, and was subsequently terminated from his position following his complaints about unpaid wages.

Monroe has filed a lawsuit against West, claiming he owes back pay, accrued interest on the amount, and additional penalties in this case. This legal action arises three years since their brief collaboration ended.

Back in July, I couldn’t believe my luck when I learned that the iconic Malibu mansion once owned by the one and only Kanye West had finally been sold! The asking price had been reduced an astounding $14 million from its original figure – talk about a steal for whoever snagged it!

The final price the mansion sold for was estimated as around $21 million, TMZ reported. 

In 2021, the ruthless rapper first acquired a residence, a design by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Snapshots released in June depicted the oceanfront property entirely stripped down, devoid of any windows.

According to records from TMZ, Kanye West’s mansion was placed under escrow back in July. This property boasts four bedrooms and five bathrooms. Initially priced at a hefty $53 million, the musician reduced the asking price significantly to $39 million in April this year.

Work on a 4,000-square-foot house near the Pacific Ocean was started by someone, but for some reason, they didn’t finish the project.

One of the workers who were brought on board for renovations mentioned to The New Yorker in June that West was intending to construct a safe haven, likened to a ‘bomb shelter’, and his own personal version of a ‘Batcave’.

Kulapat Yantrasat, an architect, expressed to the publication that ‘in all honesty’, he wasn’t fond of the house, nor was he pleased with its interior.

To start with, the building – lacking both plumbing and electricity – was originally painted white on its rear side and boasted floor-to-ceiling windows on every level.

In July, photos captured showed that the glass panes were missing, providing an unobstructed look at the bare, vacant concrete walls and ground within.

Previously reported by TMZ in April, it was noted that Jason Oppenheim, a real estate agent from Selling Sunset, was incorporated into the sales process for a house sale late last year by West.

According to Oppenheim, he remains hopeful about finding a buyer for the distressed luxury property, as he sees it as a sort of “blank canvas” for potential buyers to envision their own designs.

Previously, the artisan behind the Carnival, having purchased the property for $57 million towards the end of 2021, had plans to transform it into a ‘bomb shelter’, but these were thwarted when they collaborated with renowned Japanese architect Ando on the remodeling project.

In recent developments, Monroe’s lawsuit marks another problem arising from West’s troubled housing venture in the exclusive Southern California beach community, which has been causing quite a bit of trouble.

The west was additionally subjected to a lawsuit by Tony Saxon, the ex-manager of the renovation project, who alleges that he was dismissed following his vocalization of safety worries regarding the project, which he deemed excessively risky.

In a lawsuit filed at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Saxon claimed that he began working on the beach house project in September 2021, putting in long hours of up to 16 hours per day.

He asserted that, while serving as a combined role of project manager, caretaker, and round-the-clock security guard, he chose to sleep on the floor within the house.

According to Saxon, West initially compensated him for just a single week’s worth of work and disregarded his issues, eventually terminating his employment in November 2021 following his rejection to dismantle the house’s windows and power supply.

According to NBC News, in court proceedings, Saxon stated that the rapper intended to construct a fortress-like structure reminiscent of a 1910s bomb shelter. This plan included tearing down the elegant marble bathrooms, as well as removing the windows, plumbing, and electrical systems.

He also reportedly wanted to replace the stairs with slides. 

According to reports, Saxon allegedly took legal action against West due to multiple labor law infringements, unpaid wages totaling over $1 million, and claims for additional compensation.

According to Saxon, the plan was to completely redesign the space for the rapper, creating something akin to a personal Batman hideout. He further mentioned that this secret lair would provide him with an escape from both the Clintons and the Kardashians.

Initially, Saxon perceived the home as something akin to an artistic endeavor; however, he eventually understood that West intended it to be a place where he could reside.

He said West ‘wanted no electricity. He only wanted plants. He only wanted candles. He only wanted battery lights. And he just wanted to have everything open and dark.’
