He seemed to flit between different narrative roles without much finesse – one moment he was Nico’s protective friend, the next a source of comic relief, and then a classic ally to Morhito. Unfortunately, this lack of focus in his portrayal made him appear rather dull in the initial episodes.

However, something magical happened around Episode 8. The show finally seemed to understand Kanshi’s potential as an entertaining supporting character, and he began to shine! It was like watching a character find its footing, and it was truly exciting to see. The rivalry between Kanshi and Morihito had initially shown great promise for his character development, but it wasn’t until this episode that I felt the true potential of their relationship was being explored.

Now, I can’t wait to see where Kanshi’s journey takes him next!

This was precisely what “Witch Watch’s” anime and Kanshi’s character development required, and the transformation makes Kanshi more inspiring, empathetic, and focused while showcasing his talents. Kanshi has always been expressive and outgoing, but his expressions often led to trivial jokes or irritated other characters. However, this time around, Kanshi is acting from a place of kindness and working tirelessly to bring joy to everyone through the Otto-man stage play.

In a remarkable shift, Kanshi’s latest storytelling shines brightest when he empathizes deeply with the actor who played Otto-man in that challenging role. This act of genuine compassion reveals the authentic Kanshi – no longer just playing a part for laughs, but a caring individual who can’t bear to see others in distress. From being a complainant avoiding tasks to a dedicated worker diving headfirst into his job, Kanshi transforms into a true hero, regardless of his costume. His determination is unyielding until the day is successfully saved.

In Episode 8 of Witch Watch, an intriguing development unfolds as the series seems poised to delve deeper into the individuality of characters Kanshi and Morihito. So far, the story has hinted at a tension between these two, suggesting a more nuanced future for Kanshi’s character. As the anime progresses, it’s expected that their competition will persist; however, this rivalry could easily become superficial without significant impact on their character arcs, risking becoming another forgettable anime feud. Instead, Witch Watch Episode 8 subtly initiates a shift that explores the inner workings of Kanshi and Morihito, allowing Kanshi to break free from being solely Nico’s supporter or Morihito’s rival, offering a richer narrative experience for viewers.

In a different yet understandable phrasing: Morihito is a selfless individual, always ready to aid Nico, yet his actions are largely guided by his obligations as an ogre Familiar and childhood friend to the young witch. On the other hand, Kanshi, being another protective friend of Nico’s, requires unique characteristics to distinguish him from Morihito. It’s not enough for Kanshi to be a more chatty and impulsive version of Morihito – he needs to have a distinct inner nature. The eighth episode of Witch Watch, titled “Different Strokes,” emphasizes this by contrasting Kanshi’s emotional motivations for assisting others with Morihito’s logical ones. While Morihito might not appear emotionally driven, episodes like these highlight Kanshi’s compassionate actions towards the former Otto-man actor to keep his promise to his son. In future episodes of Witch Watch, Kanshi needs significant emotional growth to ensure his character remains distinct and on course.

Nico Needs a New Way to Express Her Witchcraft

The amusing aspects of Kanshi’s struggles are enjoyable, but Nico’s magical blunders consistently outshine them, becoming a repetitive joke. As is common in anime featuring magical girls, the constant complications associated with Nico’s witchcraft are becoming tiresome. This episode seems to linger excessively on reinforcing that Kanshi is impulsive, impatient, and restless, contrasting sharply with the calm and dutiful Morihito. The extended sequence focusing on these character traits feels repetitive and unnecessary in Episode 8, giving the impression of filler content.

In Episode 8 of “Witch Watch”, Kanshi’s one-dimensional character is a significant drawback, overshadowed only by the foreseeable sequence portraying his challenges with part-time employment. While these scenes might amuse fans who are fond of Kanshi, they fail to provide fresh insights into his character. Apart from demonstrating creative solutions to Nico’s time-speeding spell, these skits don’t offer much development for Kanshi. It’s disappointing that the series doesn’t capitalize on the efforts made to make Kanshi more appealing and identifiable by not giving him a more substantial role in this particular skit.

Regarding Nico’s magic, it’s fun that many of her spells have humorous side effects to keep things interesting. However, in the case of Kanshi, the humor from his accelerated speed loses its charm midway through. The joke becomes repetitive as it revolves around a single idea that doesn’t offer much variety.

Kanshi desires to speed up his mundane part-time job, gets enchanted to move 10 times faster, and soon regrets this due to the problems it causes. The concept is overused because there aren’t any other events or complications, which exposes a weakness in Nico’s magic creation.

Moving forward, Nico should expand her abilities beyond just struggling with her spells to become a compelling anime protagonist. She needs to explore new magical skills, learn to function without them when necessary, invent unique spells, or take on other such challenges. Perhaps she could also discover and utilize spells that deepen the understanding of witches and their realm. Essentially, Nico requires a fresh aspect in her magic-casting as the eighth episode of Witch Watch suggests that merely focusing on the downsides of her developing sorcery is no longer sufficient.
