Kang’s MCU Debut Was a Disaster

It came as a surprise to learn these multiple aspects about Kang the Conqueror’s debut film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, given that he was expected to pose the most significant threat yet. Despite some of the toughest MCU villains wreaking havoc on our heroes, Kang’s introduction seemed underdeveloped. The franchise has since continued its journey without the original actor due to various factors. However, a closer examination of Kang’s first movie’s performance data suggests that the reason behind his story being shelved might be less complex than it appears.

In the realm of the mighty Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s been proven time and again that a hero’s greatness is mirrored by the caliber of his adversary. Characters like Loki have ascended from villainy to heroism, while others, such as Thanos and Ultron, have presented us with chilling challenges for our beloved heroes and their universe. Regrettably, Kang’s MCU entrance fell short due to several factors, one of which is undoubtedly the fact that the bar set by MCU villains has been exceptionally high. Sadly, the film that introduced Kang didn’t quite measure up to the Marvel standard.

Man, I’ve always been a huge comics fan, and let me tell you, Kang from the Marvel Cinematic Universe fell short of the mark set by his comic book counterpart. This guy made his debut as a baddie for the Fantastic Four way back in 1963, and boy, did he evolve!

In the comics, Kang was born as Nathaniel Richards, a descendant of Sue and Reed, hailing from a future that’s far beyond our wildest dreams. He took to time travel as a means to establish peace and balance across the multiverse. Now, that’s a villain with depth, right? His motives might have been oppressive, but they always seemed legit, making him a truly captivating adversary in those comic stories.

I mean, you’ve got this guy popping up again and again, each time with an intriguing twist. There were so many versions of Kang that kept things fresh and interesting! If only the MCU had managed to capture even a fraction of that complexity…

In top form, Kang is equipped with an array of futuristic weapons and armor, a fact that makes him exceptionally formidable. By manipulating various timelines and strategically placing his own versions across the multiverse, Kang demonstrates both cunning intelligence and deceitful schemes. His ambitions are unique, driven by a desire for harmony he believes only he can bring about. With such control and power at his disposal, Kang presents an intriguing adversary that could have made him one of the most compelling villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Unfortunately, his standalone film fell short of captivating audiences’ interest in the character.

Audiences Did Not Show Much Interest In Ant-Man 3

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania marked the first appearance of Kang on the big screen, following his introduction at the end of Loki season 1. Unfortunately, this movie did not resonate well with critics, earning a score of just 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the lowest rating any Marvel film has received on the review aggregator to date. Given these poor reviews, it’s clear that the movie didn’t meet viewers’ expectations and may have had a negative impact on future MCU projects.

Beyond that, the box office earnings for Ant-Man 3 didn’t meet expectations. Initially, it earned an acceptable $120 million in its first four days within the U.S., but its performance declined rapidly due to negative word of mouth. In the long run, Quantumania managed a domestic total of just $212 million and a worldwide total of $476 million. This makes it one of the lower-grossing MCU films, which was unexpected given its crucial role in shaping the franchise’s future.

Kang Was Eventually Replaced For Other Reasons, But Perhaps He Should Have Been Anyway

Despite the charges against Jonathan Majors ultimately being dropped, Disney decided to replace him from his role. Instead, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom was chosen as the next major antagonist. One can’t help but speculate if this change in villains might have happened regardless of Majors’ legal issues, since Kang had already been depicted as being killed by multiple Marvel heroes, potentially making him less intimidating than initially planned for the MCU.

Had the plan for the franchise progressed and produced “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” instead of “Avengers: Doomsday“, I feel it would have been an ill-advised choice. While the film might still have been powerful, Kang lacked the menace required to pose a significant threat to the Avengers as a united force. Since he was previously defeated by Ant-Man, many agree that he wouldn’t have been formidable enough to challenge Earth’s Mightiest Heroes collectively. Unfortunately, the disappointing performance of “Quantumania” necessitated a major change in direction for the franchise.

It’s unfortunate that Jonathan Majors’ performance as Kang didn’t yield more success in the Marvel Universe, particularly in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’. Unfortunately, this film didn’t do much to establish his character for a bigger role in the franchise. Critics were unimpressed, and audiences seemed uninterested, leading to disappointing box office returns. Regrettably, Kang’s character arc had to be cut short. Let’s hope Doctor Doom fares better when he appears in the upcoming Avengers film.
