‘Kamala Is Political Beyoncé’: DNC Attendees Not Let Down by Lack of ‘Surprise’ Performance
As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed countless performances and events, I must say that the 2024 Democratic National Convention was a unique spectacle. The anticipation for a surprise performance by Beyoncé or Taylor Swift was palpable, fueling a whirlwind of excitement among viewers. However, as a lifelong cinephile who has learned to appreciate the unexpected twists and turns that make a good story, I found the event unfolding largely as scheduled to be rather refreshing.
On the last, climactic evening of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, what might have taken everyone by surprise was the lack of any major unexpected performance.
Despite much buzz and anticipation stirred by TMZ’s earlier reports, the DNC event ended as planned with Vice President Kamala Harris delivering her speech and a balloon drop at the Chicago convention center, but without an unexpected musical performance from pop star Beyoncé.
There’s been a lot of speculation for several days now about whether Beyoncé or Taylor Swift would appear on stage at the DNC. Other possibilities for surprise speakers like former President George W. Bush and Sen. Mitt Romney for the final night were proposed but turned out to be false. Romney himself confirmed that he won’t be making an appearance, stating in a post on X: “Despite what some fake news posts claim, I am not the surprise guest at the DNC tonight. I believe Beyoncé or Taylor Swift will take the stage instead. Quite disappointing, I know!”
But in the end, there was no “surprise guest,” as the event unfolded largely as scheduled. Attendees, however, weren’t disappointed.
Kristin Broner from Florida, who attended the convention as a delegate’s guest, expressed that it would have been delightful if Beyoncé were present. However, she emphasized that the gathering was not about Beyoncé; rather, it was focused on our democracy. Therefore, her presence would have been an added charm, but we were primarily there to achieve something significant – to nominate Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for the upcoming U.S. Presidency.
Indeed, having Beyoncé would’ve been fantastic. To put it another way, she’s my favorite artist, aka Queen B. However, let me clarify that this isn’t about our personal entertainment.
There’s been buzz that Beyoncé could perform at the DNC, with theories supported by several hints. For instance, a soundcheck at the United Center played her song “Cuff It,” and Kamala Harris has used Beyoncé’s 2016 track “Freedom” in campaign videos. Just before Harris stepped onto the stage, Beyoncé’s latest hit “Texas Hold ‘Em” echoed through the arena speakers as the crowd waved flags and showed excitement for a potential live show, some even sporting cowboy hats reminiscent of her Renaissance Tour outfit.
Subtle indications, coupled with Beyoncé’s past criticisms of ex-President Donald Trump and her affiliation with Democratic causes, made it appear likely that she would be there for many. Some even speculated if popular hitmaker Swift, fresh off the European tour leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour and a recent fake endorsement of Trump, might surprise us too.
Many viewers felt cheated after neither of them showed up, as indicated by social media posts. Some criticized TMZ for being deceived, while others humorously referred to the actual surprise of the evening.
Maybe the surprise guest was the friends we made along the way

If it’s news to you that there was a surprise guest star for the past month, that person happens to be Kamala Harris.

However, Democratic attendees commented that it might have been more advantageous for Kamala Harris, who delivered her first significant speech as a presidential candidate just weeks prior following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal, not to be outshone by a popular music star during the event.
“An unidentified source shared with TIME that Beyoncé is the preferred celebrity of other celebrities, which could potentially overshadow Kamala in a given situation.”
Even though neither Beyoncé nor Swift were present—as The Hollywood Reporter stated, Beyoncé wasn’t scheduled to attend—the final night of the convention still boasted a star-studded roster of performers on Thursday. Kicking off the primetime segment was The Chicks with a powerful a cappella rendition of the national anthem, followed by P!nk delivering a captivating performance of her protest song “What About Us,” accompanied by her daughter Willow Sage Hart. Under the guidance of chair Minyon Moore, who has aimed to attract diverse and younger audiences, the DNC had already showcased performances earlier in the week from John Legend, Stevie Wonder, and Lil Jon, whose dynamic sets have been praised for creating an electrifying atmosphere.
In awe, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Kamala reminds me of the global phenomenon that is Beyoncé.” She truly embodies the spirit of political stardom. Her presence and influence are unparalleled, leaving one to wonder, what more could one ask for?
