Kaitlyn Dever had extra security on The Last of Us set since so many people hate her character
As a gamer who’s been through the apocalyptic wastelands of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us series, I must say that the drama surrounding Abby Anderson and her character in the game and upcoming HBO adaptation has been quite the rollercoaster ride. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling when a fictional character can elicit such passionate reactions from fans!
In June 2020, Naughty Dog unveiled “The Last of Us Part II,” a sequel to their highly successful zombie-survival game, “The Last of Us.” This release came shortly after the start of lockdowns due to COVID-19, and it seems that people were feeling particularly restless, as there was an overwhelming negative response online following its debut. Many fans expressed dissatisfaction with certain plot developments in the story.
In the second season of “The Last of Us” HBO adaptation, we won’t reveal the unexpected events just yet, but they include a fresh character named Abby Anderson, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. To express it simply, when the game initially released, some fans had strong negative feelings towards Abby. It seems that HBO is concerned enough about a possible recurrence of this sentiment that they’ve provided additional security for Dever on the show’s set.
According to actress Isabela Merced, who portrays Dina in “The Last of Us” season 2, she shared that there are many unusual individuals due to some people genuinely disliking Abby, a fictional character. Kaitlyn, presumably another cast member, needed additional security during filming because of this. Isabela mentioned this during her conversation with Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.
Initially, “The Last of Us Part II” faced a significant backlash upon its release. However, despite this criticism, the game turned out to be commercially successful. As time passed and the initial uproar subsided, it became clearer that some of the plot twists, which had infuriated many, were daring and intriguing. I’m looking forward to seeing how these elements unfold in the upcoming HBO series.
Speaking as a devoted fan, it appears that Kaitlyn Dever manages to keep her composure amidst lingering fan frustration. As a friend shared, “Kaitlyn is an amazingly composed individual who stays unfazed by the ups and downs. She’s got her priorities straight, and on top of that, she’s currently navigating through some personal hardships.” Referencing Dever’s recent loss of her mother, my heart aches but I can’t help but feel that she deserves the Emmy. Honestly, I’m thrilled for everyone to witness the outstanding performance by Bella and Kaitlyn in this production.
The Last of Us season 2 is in the “tail end” of filming
Back in 2023, I was thrilled as a fan when the first season of The Last of Us graced our screens on HBO, earning widespread praise. As I write this, filming for season 2 is wrapping up, with Merced stating that we’re almost at the end of it all now.
Each day on this filming location presents its own difficulties, she explained. After all, it’s a program centered around fungi, which isn’t exactly glitzy or glamorous. We tackle heavy themes and discussions, and more often than not, fear is a strong feeling that we grapple with throughout the process.
2025 seems to be when we can expect the second season to debut, and with “The Last of Us Part II” being quite extensive, it’s reasonable to anticipate that there will probably be at least another season following that one.
Original Abby actor won’t appear in The Last of Us season 2
If Dever needs guidance on managing troublesome fans, she could consider reaching out to Laura Bailey, the actress who portrayed Abby in the initial video game. Bailey encountered this situation herself in 2020, so her advice is well-informed.
As a devoted fan, it was thrilling to see familiar faces from the video games make cameo appearances in the show. Troy Baker, who originally played Joel, embodied a member of a cannibalistic cult, Ashley Johnson, the original Ellie, took on the role of Ellie’s mother, and Laura Bailey portrayed a nurse in the season finale. However, unlike Johnson and Baker, it seems that Bailey won’t be reprising her role for Season 2. During San Diego Comic-Con, she shared with Inverse, “I won’t be in Season 2, but that would be really great.”
As a gamer, I can’t help but notice the familiar faces gracing the screen in “The Last of Us” TV series. I, myself, have seen Pedro Pascal breathe life into Joel and Bella Ramsey embody Ellie, just as they did in the video games. It’s fascinating to see some actors reprise their roles from the original games. For instance, Merle Dandridge returned as Marlene in season 1, and I can’t wait to see Jeffrey Wright back as paramilitary leader Isaac in season 2.
