KABC news anchor Ellen Leyva to retire
Ellen Leyva, a well-known news anchor at KABC-TV Channel 7, is saying goodbye after almost 30 years, making her the most recent high-profile broadcaster to part ways with the station.
On Monday, Leyva unveiled the news during the daily broadcast of the Walt Disney Company’s station. She intends to continue working alongside her long-term co-host, David Ono, for a short while longer as part of a transition period, according to station executives. The plan is to make this change smoothly over the coming months.
Following deep reflection and self-examination, I am confident it’s time for me to embark on my next significant journey in life,” Leyva shared, mentioning that this choice has been weighing on his mind for quite some time.
I’m writing this email to share some bittersweet news with you all – our esteemed colleague and General Manager, Wendy Granato, has announced Leyva’s retirement. It’s a mix of emotions for us as we say goodbye to a valued team member who has contributed so much to our success here at KABC.
The television station located in Glendale has consistently been recognized for its consistent on-air team, which is one of the most stable in Los Angeles. Their anchors continue to be well-liked by viewers despite shifts in news consumption habits and declining profitability for network’s local divisions. A report from the Pew Research Center published last spring emphasized this industry trend, pointing out that an increasing number of Americans are obtaining their local news through online sources.
In essence, a significant number of participants in the Pew survey stated that local news coverage matters significantly to their community.
Local broadcasters showcased their resilience and significance by offering extensive, round-the-clock coverage of the recent wildfires in Altadena and Pacific Palisades, along with the heartbreaking aftermath that affected thousands who mourned the loss of family members, homes, religious institutions, schools, and businesses.

In times of disaster and sorrow, local journalists and news presenters who are deeply connected to the community often exceed their expected responsibilities.
Leyva is the latest local news anchor to exit.
In 2020, well-known weather forecaster Fritz Coleman from KNBC-TV Channel 4 decided to retire. Two years later, several distinguished journalists from KNBC – Beverly White, Chuck Henry, Kim Baldonado, and Angie Crouch – followed suit and retired. Moreover, in 2022, Lynette Romero, a longtime favorite of viewers, joined KNBC after an attention-grabbing departure from KTLA-TV Channel 5.
In the past year, two tragic deaths left a profound impact on the local broadcasting world: Sam Rubin, a respected entertainment anchor for KTLA, passed away in May; and Chauncy Glover, a co-anchor for KCAL-TV Channel 9, unexpectedly died in November at the age of 39.

As a film enthusiast reflecting on a loss, I’m saddened to share that Sam Rubin, a long-standing entertainment anchor at KTLA, passed away suddenly this past Friday following a heart attack. He was just 64 years old.
Born and raised in Arizona, Leyva began her career with KABC in 1995 as a health journalist. Over time, she transitioned to the anchor desk.
Over time, she has shared hosting duties for Oscars’ red carpet arrivals, experienced soaring through the skies with the Blue Angels, and consistently maintained a strong on-air presence. Furthermore, she led KABC’s team during AIDS Walk Los Angeles and actively advocated for mental health services within underprivileged communities.
As a film enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: “I can’t stress enough how irreplaceable and highly valued she has been to our Eyewitness News family. In fact, my words don’t quite capture the depth of our appreciation.
The station did not specify Leyva’s departure date.
Leyva shared with the audience that this workplace feels like a second home to him, where everyone who works here and all of you are included. He considers his career here as incredibly fulfilling, surrounded by fantastic individuals in an exceptional city.
