K-pop star Chaewon sparks health fears with alarmingly thin frame… as fans compare her to a SKELETON

Fans are concerned about a K-pop idol’s health after she appeared very thin during a recent performance.

Kim Chaewon, a popular member of the K-pop group TripleS, appeared noticeably thinner than usual during the group’s recent concert in Taipei.

The 18-year-old danced to the group’s song ‘Bubble Gum Girl’, and her slim frame was noticeable in a pink crop top and ruffled miniskirt.

Fans were alarmed after a performance video circulated online, with many expressing worry about the artist’s noticeably thin appearance.

‘It’s amazing that she even has the strength to move, it’s not normal,’ commented one.

‘The camera adds ten pounds… I can’t imagine how small this girl looks in person,’ wrote another.

One person commented, shocked, saying she looked incredibly thin – like a skeleton. They initially thought it might be a digital animation, but realized how disturbing the situation actually was.

Chaewon was just 16 years old when she joined TripleS, which boasts a whopping 24-members.

Formed in 2022, this group has quickly become established, already releasing two full albums, several EPs, and touring the world multiple times.

Before becoming a member of TripleS, Chaewon was in the girl group Busters. She joined Busters right before turning 13, and that group is no longer active.

She worked as a child actress before that, making her acting debut in 2008 when she was just four. 

K-pop is a huge economic force for the country, generating billions of dollars annually. However, the young performers in this industry face immense pressure to be flawless in everything they do.

The Korea Times reports that a book investigating K-pop, called K-pop: Idols in Wonderland, found that up to 80% of female K-pop trainees lose their periods because of severely limited diets.

Other factors, such as stress and lack of sleep, are also likely to blame. 

In 2023, NewJeans member Hyein shared a photo of the very small meal she was eating while filming a music video.

A video shows the fourteen-year-old picking at a small meal of sliced avocado, two cherry tomato halves, and yellow rice.

TWICE’s Momo has spoken openly about a difficult time when she restricted her eating so much that she became seriously worried about her health.

The singer, now 29 years old, revealed she was pressured to lose 7 kilograms (15 pounds) in just one week before her group, TWICE, officially started performing in 2015.

If she failed to do so, she wouldn’t make it into the group.

She restricted her diet to only a single ice cube and worked out constantly for an entire week, all in an effort to reach her desired weight.

She explained on Jihyo Candy Nights that she hadn’t eaten for a week and had been constantly at the gym, leaving her severely dehydrated.

She continued, explaining that as she lay in bed trying to fall asleep, she became frightened she wouldn’t wake up, and unexpectedly burst into tears.

I ate a single ice cube, but I was even worried about gaining weight from it. Despite this, I hadn’t lost 7 kilograms by the deadline, so they extended the time by about three days.

Sadly, former K-pop star Kwon Mina was found safe earlier this year after a suicide attempt on New Year’s Day.

On January 1st, a 32-year-old woman posted a concerning message on social media saying ‘Goodbye and I’m sorry.’ She has previously attempted suicide.

Mina tried to end her life in 2020, and at the time, she said it was because of ongoing bullying she suffered while she was a member of the girl group AOA.

In 2021, she was hospitalized after being found unconscious at home following a suicide attempt. This happened a year after a previous attempt.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always believed in being open about mental health, and recently, a singer and actress bravely shared her struggles. Before trying something new on January 1st, she let her followers know she wasn’t feeling her best. She explained that past experiences – including bullying and a difficult incident from 2007 – had really taken a toll on her emotional wellbeing. It’s so important to acknowledge these things and prioritize self-care.
