The showrunner behind Netflix’s comedy series, Running Point, recently explained how they developed Justin Theroux’s character, Cam Gordon, to be the season’s antagonist.
I recently spoke with creator David Stassen, and he’s really excited about seeing Cam’s dynamic with Isla Gordon and her family this season. Now that Cam’s out of rehab, Stassen wanted to explore their relationship more directly. But the big question for him and the writing team wasn’t if Cam would be a villain, but how villainous he’d become, and just how quickly that side of him would emerge.
Cam was a highly skilled professional, but personal problems led to his departure from his job. The showrunner, Stassen, didn’t want to portray Cam as a clear-cut villain too soon in the second season of Running Point. Instead, they carefully developed his character arc, aiming for nuance as the season’s stories progressed.
Okay, so Kate Hudson’s character, Isla, finally had a chance to run the Los Angeles Waves without her brother Cam constantly stirring things up. But now he’s back, and let me tell you, he’s making her job – and honestly, the whole family – a complete mess. It’s like he thrives on creating drama, and it’s really throwing a wrench into everything Isla’s trying to build.
According to Stassen, Isla is intelligent and wants to believe Cam when he offers help. However, she’s also cautious and always watches for any hidden motives or a different side to his personality.
Going into the second season, we were thrilled Cam had completed rehab and could spend more time with Isla and the family in person. Our main challenge was figuring out how and when to reveal his villainous side. We wanted to remember that Cam is intelligent and used to be good at manipulating people, so we didn’t want him to become obviously evil too quickly. Isla is also very perceptive; she wants to believe he’s changed and is genuinely trying to help, but she’s always wary and watching for his darker side to emerge.
The series Running Point starts with Cam, the president of the Los Angeles Waves, entering rehab. Meanwhile, his sister Isla receives a promotion and is put in charge of turning the team around and leading them to a championship. Although they make it to the playoffs by the end of the first season, the team ultimately loses in the seventh and final game.
The finale wasn’t short on surprises, culminating in the unexpected return of Cam. Before that reveal, Cam had been stirring up trouble by spreading rumors about the Los Angeles Waves and trying to leave rehab ahead of schedule.
At the start of season two of Running Point, Cam is creating difficulties for Isla. Despite saying he doesn’t want to be president again, his actions show he’s willing to sabotage his sister, and the season uncovers some surprising truths.
Despite everything happening around her, Isla is still focused on her job: preparing her team for another chance to win the championship.
Cam’s return to the show means Theroux will now be a main cast member, having previously appeared in a recurring role during the first season. Before Running Point, Theroux was known for his work in films and television series including Mulholland Drive, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, American Psycho, Zoolander, The Leftovers, and Fallout.
The cast of Running Point includes Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Chet Hanks, Toby Sandeman, Uche Agada, Ray Romano, Ken Marino, Tommy Dewey, Richa Moorjani, Jake Picking, Blake Anderson, Duby Maduegbunam, Aliyah Turner, alongside Hudson and Theroux.
The show Running Point received generally positive feedback when it first launched in 2025, earning a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, its second season is being praised even more, with a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 86%.
Running Point season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.
