Justin Hartley‘s popular show, Tracker, is changing what people expect from procedural dramas. The series follows Colter Shaw, who uses his expertise in survival to find lost things – and people, because everyone has something they’re searching for. As it begins its third season, Tracker isn’t shying away from bold choices, and those risks are proving successful.
The latest episode of Tracker, titled “First Fire,” featured Colter searching for a patient who went missing from a psychiatric facility. For the first time in the series, Colter declines to accept payment for a job, as he feels he failed to deliver. While he’s previously donated his earnings or suggested alternative uses for the money, this is the first time it’s been due to his own unsuccessful outcome.
Tracker’s Latest Episode Marks the First Time Colter Failed a Job
The most recent installment of the show focuses on the disappearance of Heston Koontz. Koontz vanished from the Wyndham Psychiatric Detention Center during a Halloween night storm. Before being arrested, he was fixated on a woman named Emily Collins. He was sentenced to life in prison for the horrific crime of burning her family alive and initially held in a maximum-security psychiatric facility. After serving ten years, he was moved to a less secure facility due to good behavior.
So, I just learned about this really intense case. Apparently, the Koontz family hired a guy named Colter to find their son, Heston, before he could hurt someone. They were convinced Heston was beyond help and a serious danger to others. The frustrating part is, they’d already tried going to the police with their concerns before Heston actually did anything, but the cops dismissed them. Now, Colter is on the case, teaming up with a local detective to track Heston down. It sounds like a real pressure cooker of a situation!
Koontz was captured by a radical group within the church, known as the Fideles. Led by Sister Carlotta, this group believed it was their sacred mission to eliminate evil forces. They kidnapped Koontz, along with Emily Collins, who they thought was connected to a powerful demon. Their intention was to burn both of them at the stake, destroying the demon and protecting humankind.
Colter and Dundee managed to rescue Emily, but unfortunately, they arrived too late to save Heston Koontz. Koontz had freed himself and attacked Sister Carlotta, resulting in him being shot multiple times by another member of the Fideles group. Colter has consistently maintained that he only accepts payment when a job is successful. Because Koontz died, Colter views the mission as a failure and refuses to accept payment from Koontz’s parents, telling them he only gets paid for successful outcomes and couldn’t save their son. The person offering the reward suggests giving the money to Emily, believing she would use it wisely.
This is the first time Colter has ever struggled with a case. Both the showrunner and Justin Hartley emphasize that Colter’s strength lies in his humanity – he’s flawed and makes mistakes. He’s still grappling with the shocking truth about his mother’s role in his father’s death. “First Fire” marks Colter’s return to solo work after a brief absence, and while the premiere seemed to offer some relief, the pain of his mother’s betrayal continues to haunt him. This latest failure is a difficult setback for him.
‘First Fire’ Isn’t the First Time Colter Refused Payment
Although “First Fire” marks the first time Colter didn’t complete a job successfully – ending a two-season streak of wins – he’d previously declined payment for his work. In the story “Man’s Best Friend,” Colter discovers a lost dog and, noticing an address on its collar, decides to return it home.
While the man was quickly inside a store, someone broke into his truck and stole his dog. When he checked the dog’s collar for an address, he discovered a woman and her son tied up. He freed them, and the boy pleaded with him to find his dog, offering his entire life savings – $187 – as a reward. After getting the dog back, the boy tried to pay the man, but he told him to use the money to buy his mother a gift instead.
Colter travels to New Orleans to find a missing teenager named Anton. Anton’s father hired Colter, and he teamed up with a local detective, Veach, who knew about Colter’s skills from a previous case. Veach suggested Anton’s father hire Colter because the police couldn’t begin a formal investigation yet. Colter soon discovers Anton was in danger, targeted by a group planning to sacrifice him.
Anton was hiding in a church with the help of Father Cheval, but when the group pursuing him found out, they killed the priest. Colter and Veach arrived just in time to rescue Anton. When Anton’s father offered to pay Colter for his help, Colter suggested they donate the money to the church instead, as a tribute to Father Cheval’s bravery.
