People often make fun of Aquaman and question his role in the Justice League. But even if he could only talk to fish – which isn’t the case – his position as King of Atlantis would still give him considerable political and magical influence. Recent comics have emphasized his growing importance, particularly the storyline that named him the Avatar of The Blue. However, his latest adventure really showcased the full extent of his power.
In Emperor Aquaman #16, written by Jeremy Adams and illustrated by John Timms, Aquaman (Arthur Curry) continues building his empire. After participating in the DC K.O. tournament, Arthur had a vision to build structures called “lighthouses” throughout the universe. These lighthouses are designed to connect different underwater alien civilizations via a network called The Blue, and also to help him anticipate future threats.
I was reading this Aquaman story, and it’s wild! He and a small group – even Zan from the Wonder Twins was there – went to this alien planet, and the creatures there were already expecting him! Apparently, a prophecy said a king from Atlantis would arrive, and they’d even built a lighthouse for him. But things quickly went south. It turned out these friendly aliens were being controlled by these nasty parasites who were planning to hitch a ride with Aquaman and invade Earth! It’s a really tense situation.
How Aquaman saved an entire world
Aquaman found himself in a difficult situation: the entire world was controlled by a single, collective consciousness. He didn’t want to harm the people who were being controlled, but he also couldn’t directly attack the creatures controlling them with his mind. Then, he had a clever idea – combining his new ability as Avatar of the Blue, which let him manipulate all water, with some scientific understanding, to target the parasites themselves.
Aquaman discovered the parasites had become inactive because their home planet had frozen. Using the water inside each infected person, he forced the parasites out. Then, he quickly froze them solid by manipulating water molecules around them.
Since gaining his new powers, Aquaman’s endurance and senses have significantly improved. This impressive development, similar to what Swamp Thing can achieve as the Avatar of the Green, really demonstrates his potential. With the ability to instantly impact the entire world, Arthur Curry has proven he belongs on the Justice League.
Emperor Aquaman #16 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
