As a seasoned Star Trek enthusiast with over three decades of voyages through the final frontier under my belt, I must admit that Star Trek: Discovery had a rocky start for me too. The first season was a bit like navigating an unfamiliar warp path, and I found myself questioning if this new addition to the franchise would live up to its predecessors. However, much like how Captain Kirk once faced down the Gorn, I bravely persevered, and boy, am I glad I did!
Initially, some Star Trek series may have a bumpy beginning. It could be due to teething problems or simply a period of adaptation, but shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine experienced this phase. Certain episodes from these early seasons are still considered difficult to watch today. Similarly, Star Trek: Discovery struggled with similar issues during its first season.
I, as a dedicated fan, found it fascinating to watch Shonequa Martin-Green step into the role of Michael Burnham. Interestingly enough, this was the initial Star Trek series where the future captain turned out to be a criminal, offering a fresh perspective on the classic franchise. However, as the episodes unfolded, there was a gradual smoothing out of events before things truly took off in season two.
Many viewers admitted to not continuing past the initial season or just a few early episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Those who ceased watching after seeing some of the first-season episodes were deprived of a series that eventually ranked among the franchise’s finest.
Despite differing opinions on some Star Trek series, Discovery has faced more criticism than it warranted. After the first season, there were numerous exceptional episodes that followed, not to mention the introduction of Captain Pike, Spock, and Number One in season two. And let’s not forget the captivating Short Trek featuring Spock and Number One!
In every series, there are characters that fans didn’t like. Wesley Crusher [Wil Wheaton] and Neelix [Ethan Phillips] come to mind, but then there are others who really stand out. It’s the same with Discovery. I was one of those fans who originally didn’t make it past the first two episodes, but I came back much later and discovered something unique that I really enjoyed. That might not be the case for you, but it’s something to consider if you’re on the fence about watching Discovery or have only viewed a few episodes.
