Just a one hit wonder? Shock video of Nikki Webster singing off-key during an episode of Playschool emerges: ‘Sounds absolutely terrible’
As a longtime admirer of Nikki Webster, I must admit that I was initially thrilled to see her appear on Play School this week. After all, she captured the hearts of Australians and the world at just 13 years old when she performed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment as I watched her performance on the iconic children’s series.
As a long-time fan of Play School, I was excited to hear that Nikki Webster was making a surprise appearance on the iconic ABC Kids series this week. However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment as I watched her performance unfold on my TV screen.
37-year-old popular singer, renowned for her hit song “We’ll Be One” performed at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, appeared on the program to talk about the upcoming Games in Paris.
In an unexpected choice, Webster opted not to perform her own song during the event; instead, she sang a rendition of Vanessa Amorosi’s well-known Olympics anthem, titled “Absolutely Everybody.”
“Every person has a favorite activity that brings them joy, and let’s not forget the importance of singing – this includes everyone, Nicki emphasized.”
1. After emerging from Sydney, the celebrity delivered an uncommon performance of Amorosi’s famous tune accompanied by a girls’ chorus; however, she found it challenging to reach the higher pitches.
On social media, viewers expressed their criticism and doubt towards her role in the series soon after its release. Some even wondered if she was the right choice for the part initially.
‘Why did they just get Vanessa Amorosi to sing it?’ one upset fan asked.
“One person remarked, ‘It’s absolutely atrocious,’ and another agreed, ‘Vanessa is having a hard time breathing. She’d do better if this weren’t happening.'”

At only 13 years old, Nikki captured the affection of Australians and people around the world with her breathtaking performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
She then launched her career as a pop star, whose biggest hit was the 2001 song Strawberry Kisses.
1. The tune eventually served as an informal hymn for the Matildas during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, boosting Webster’s fame once again.
2005 saw the appearance of Nikki, sporting a provocative look, on the cover of the then-popular men’s magazine FHM, which no longer exists. This happened shortly after she was invited for the photoshoot, as a way to commemorate her 18th birthday.

She was subsequently voted seventh in the FHM Australia 100 Sexiest Women 2005 list.
The Sydney native married Matthew McMah in 2012, before ending their marriage in 2018.
They share two children together, daughter Skylah, 10, and son Malachi, seven.
