The much-anticipated new chapter in the Jurassic World series, originally conceived by Steven Spielberg back in the ’90s, hits theaters today. With previous films receiving a mix of positive and negative feedback, Universal Pictures is hoping for a fresh start to revitalize the franchise. To do this, a new director and cast were brought on board to breathe life into the Jurassic universe once more. However, it wasn’t just new faces that were needed; franchise overseer Steven Spielberg also enlisted David Koepp, a veteran of the original Jurassic Park, to take on screenwriting duties. For Koepp, this return was both challenging and exciting as he sought to recapture the same tone established in Spielberg’s 1993 classic.
Koepp recently had a conversation with IndieWire about his involvement in the Jurassic films once more. Back in 1993 and 1997, he was the one who transformed Michael Crichton’s books into the movies Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, respectively. A while ago, he received a call from Steven Spielberg, asking if he would be interested in working on another installment after 27 years had passed. After rewatching all of the films, he found that there have been three movies so far, featuring new characters and ideas. As Dominion concluded things so dramatically, he asked if they could develop new characters and new concepts for this next film.
The seasoned screenwriter, known for movies such as Spider-Man, Panic Room, and War of the Worlds, shared insights into what sparked him to write another Jurassic film. A significant amount of time has passed since he was in a park where dinosaurs broke free, but despite the absence of one crucial member (Michael Crichton, who passed away in 2008), Koepp shares that he managed to rekindle the essence of the initial Jurassic films.
I aimed to mimic the playful spirit of the original work as it brought joy to me back then. However, it seems that ability might have faded with time, though I can’t say it’s completely lost.
The style of Steven’s debut movie was a blend reminiscent of both Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg’s approaches. Although their perspectives differ, one being darker and the other lighter, this is just how it is. My unique humor was also included. To achieve that same feel, I decided to reunite the team: myself, Michael Crichton, and Steven Spielberg on the project, with one of us working on it after their passing. Initially, I had concerns, but as soon as we began, I felt like I had returned to the early days of making the first one.
In conclusion, Koepp was questioned if there were any elements from his initial Jurassic Park film production that he was compelled to exclude earlier, but could now incorporate into Jurassic World Dominion. His response pertained to one of the movie’s intricate sets.
Absolutely! The raft scene from the latest film has finally made its way into the movie, an idea I had previously considered but couldn’t implement due to structural or budgetary constraints at the time. With the advancements in CGI, even a T-Rex swimming was once thought impossible, but now, water effects have significantly improved with this technology. Therefore, expect this scene to be included, and I might even restructure the entire film around it if necessary.
