Jurassic World Rebirth Ending Shocker: Who Survives the D-Rex Carnage?
Gareth Edwards’ contribution to the Jurassic World series, titled “Jurassic World: Rebirth”, has officially hit theaters. With a new director at the helm and the return of veteran Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, this film presents a fresh, standalone story that diverges from the narrative of the last three Jurassic World movies. The focus of Rebirth is on a mercenary squad led by Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) and Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), who are enlisted by Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), a representative from a pharmaceutical company. Their mission involves safely transporting paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and obtaining blood samples from the three largest dinosaur species residing on Ile Saint-Hubert island.
The film titled “Rebirth” offers an engaging survival tale, which is comparatively less grand than the international escapades in the last “Jurassic World” movie. Consequently, its conclusion is more intimate, but it amplifies the tension by portraying a desperate struggle for life against the D-Rex, a grotesque, destructive mutation of a dinosaur species.
‘Jurassic World Rebirth‘ Tells a Smaller-Scale Story While Increasing the Scares With Mutated Dinos
The story of “Jurassic World Rebirth” starts in 2010, five years prior to the events depicted in the first Jurassic World movie. It focuses on Ingen Lab, where they created genetically modified dinosaurs (including possibly the Indominus Rex). A mishap by a scientist accidentally unleashes the D-Rex, leading to the lab’s abandonment and the desertion of the island. The narrative then jumps to the present day, where the film’s central team is brought together for an entirely new purpose. Instead of using dinosaurs for entertainment as before, a pharmaceutical company now seeks their cardiovascular abilities to develop drugs and dominate the heart medicine market.
Essentially, Edwards’ film, “Jurassic World,” takes a more authentic approach compared to the previous two films by subtly incorporating both human and dinosaur exploitation. While not significantly different, it offers a fresh perspective by portraying dinosaurs as tools for Big Pharma’s benefit. Intriguingly, the movie “Rebirth” seems to counteract the events of “Jurassic World Dominion” by suggesting that Earth’s environment and climate become increasingly inhospitable to dinosaurs, leading to their extinction in populated areas globally. They are then confined to islands near the equator where they can survive more easily.
Rebirth offers a fresh take on the classic island adventure reminiscent of the original Jurassic Park series by introducing hybrid dinosaurs into the action. Towards the end, the movie escalates into a pulse-pounding struggle for survival as our main characters – Zora, Duncan, Henry, Martin, and the family who got stranded initially – race against time to escape the island, all while being pursued by both Mutadons and the D-Rex. The Mutadons are particularly chilling, being a fusion of Velociraptor and Pterosaur creatures.
The D-Rex Reigns in the Ending of Jurassic World Rebirth
The movie, titled Jurassic World Rebirth, seems to blend elements from The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3. It alternates between two tales; one involves mercenaries on a mission, evoking memories of The Lost World. The other story revolves around Father Reuben Delgado (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) and his daughters Teresa (Luna Blaise) and Isabella (Audrina Miranda), along with Teresa’s boyfriend, Xavier (David Iacono). This setup resembles the family drama in Jurassic Park 3. Eventually, both groups find themselves at an abandoned research and development facility, a point where their stories intertwine.
As a film critic, I found myself on edge as the plot thickened, revealing Martin’s questionable actions that had dire consequences. It was revealed he let Isabella fall off the boat earlier in the movie so as to protect his pharmaceutical company’s clandestine operation on the island, withholding valuable medicine production from others.
However, in a classic twist reminiscent of a Jurassic Park tale, Martin met an unfortunate end when he was devoured by the film’s main antagonist, the fearsome D-Rex, who bit him clean in half. Yet, the relentless D-Rex did not stop there; it pursued the remaining (ethically upright) survivors, coming perilously close to capturing young Isabella.
In a selfless act of bravery, Duncan decided to risk his life and use a flare as bait to lure the monstrous beast away from the group, ultimately saving Isabella from certain doom. The film’s climax left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting the final showdown between the survivors and the relentless D-Rex.
Throughout the movie, Duncan’s grief over his son’s mysterious death is evident. This loss makes him extremely cautious with the children in the film, and his longing for redemption and inner peace becomes clear. In a selfless act, Duncan sacrifices himself to the D-Rex so that everyone else can flee on a raft boat when their helicopter escort is destroyed by the mutated dinosaur. Yet, as the group sets sail, Duncan signals his survival by lighting another flare, having managed to evade the monster’s grasp. With the samples now in Henry’s care, he and Zora choose to use them to develop medicine for those in need everywhere.
The Deeper Meaning in ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’s Ending
In essence, the finale of Jurassic World Rebirth deviates from establishing sequels or global dinosaur conflicts, instead focusing on characters achieving inner tranquility. This shift is remarkably refreshing, a trait also evident in Edwards’ other works such as The Creator, Rogue One, and Godzilla which exhibit comparable introspection. Initially self-centered, Zora’s character undergoes a transformation, opting to utilize her efforts for the benefit of others. Although this resolution may seem predictable, it is executed more effectively than the previous Jurassic World film.
In the climax of Jurassic World: Rebirth, the audience is treated to the spectacle of some of the most fearsome, genetically modified dinosaurs, as well as a tale that highlights selfless human nature triumphing over ambition and corporate greed. If there’s another film in this series, it might be challenging to explain why the characters would go back to an island teeming with dinosaurs, as the ending doesn’t hint at a sequel. Yet, with its impressive box office earnings, it seems that both life and potential sequels have a way of persisting.
