Jurassic Park Got It Wrong?! The Dino Detail That Still Bugs Me!
In the Jurassic Park film series, a variety of dinosaurs from the Jurassic era are prominently showcased, but one particular dinosaur has been misrepresented since Steven Spielberg’s first movie, which bothers many fans. Over six movies spanning the Jurassic timeline, the series has garnered acclaim for its visually impressive effects and portrayal of these dangerous creatures. However, due to limited information available about certain dinosaur species at the time of the 1993 film’s release, some inaccuracies have been introduced into the Jurassic franchise’s depiction of these prehistoric beasts. Notably, some of the most iconic dinosaurs featured in the original Jurassic Park films actually hail from periods other than the Jurassic.
Lately, it has been noticed that there are some errors in the depiction of key moments in a well-known movie, specifically the Velociraptor’s kitchen chase and the final T. rex roar under the Jurassic Park banner. These mistakes might actually enhance the films’ appeal due to their dramatic impact. These scenes have become legendary and indispensable, yet they make us wonder about the scientific license taken by the franchise. For me, the most striking error concerns the Dilophosaurus, despite its limited screen time, it played a significant role in two of the series’ most unforgettable on-screen deaths in Jurassic Park and Jurassic World Dominion.
The Dilophosaurus In Jurassic Park & Jurassic World Dominion Do Not Align With Scientific Understanding
The Dilophosaurus Was Actually Far Larger In Scale Than The Ones In The Jurassic Franchise
In the blockbuster movie Jurassic Park, the Dilophosaurus made a brief yet memorable debut, only to reappear in Jurassic World Dominion much later. Despite the fact that many of the dinosaurs portrayed in Jurassic Park contain inaccuracies, the Dilophosaurus stands out as one of the most notable examples. Real-life scientists have discovered that this specific species could reach lengths of up to 20 feet and was a formidable predator. If the Dilophosaurus were accurately scaled, it would dwarf the renowned Velociraptor in size. Contrary to its portrayal in the film, it’s unlikely that the Dilophosaurus sported neck frills or possessed venom capable of paralyzing prey, as its physical characteristics and carnivorous diet did not necessitate these traits.
In essence, Jurassic Park could have made the Dilophosaurus appear more menacing than the Velociraptor if its depiction had been based on what we now know about the species. However, due to limited knowledge about the Dilophosaurus at the time, the filmmakers had to invent certain aspects of the dinosaur’s behavior and appearance. Despite the fear it instills in viewers, it’s a shame that the portrayal isn’t more accurate to its historical context.
The Dilophosaurus Is Still Responsible For Two Of The Jurassic Franchise’s Most Memorable Deaths
The Dilophosaurus Killed Two Very Important Characters In Jurassic Park & Jurassic World Dominion
In the movie Jurassic Park, the Dilophosaurus made a crucial scene debut. Dennis Nedry encountered this species while trying to steal embryos from Hammond’s lab for a substantial financial reward from Biosyn. Initially, the Dilophosaurus was shown as a harmless creature, but it quickly proved to be extremely dangerous. Contrary to what happened in the novel, Nedry’s death was less brutal in the film version. The Dilophosaurus didn’t appear again until the movie Jurassic World Dominion, except for a hologram in the initial Jurassic World.
In “Jurassic World Dominion,” the Dilophosaurus makes a reappearance, and Claire Dearing has an intimate encounter with it during the climax. Fortunately, Owen Grady and the helicopter pilot, Kayla Watts, rescue her. Later on, the species resurfaces as a pack to hunt and eliminate Lewis Dodgson. Dodgson is the CEO of Biosyn and serves as the primary adversary in the series. His demise at the jaws of the same species that claimed Dennis Nedry’s life provides a fitting closure, underscoring their intertwined destinies. Significantly, Dodgson suffers the same fate due to his role in Nedry’s death, which was depicted in “Jurassic Park.
