The next Jumanji movie will be filmed in Los Angeles for the first time ever. It’s one of 52 films heading to the city thanks to a significant tax break.
The upcoming Jumanji 4 will receive nearly $44 million in tax credits to film in Los Angeles. This comes after California significantly expanded its entertainment tax credit program, with the goal of attracting more major movie productions back to Hollywood. Director Jake Kasdan expressed his gratitude, stating he’s been waiting for the California Film Incentive to help bring films like Jumanji back home, and is thrilled his movie will be one of the first to benefit from the new program.
It’s surprising that none of the Jumanji movies have been filmed in Los Angeles. The original 1995 film with Robin Williams was shot in New Hampshire and around Vancouver, Canada – the locations where the story takes place. When the series was revived in 2017 with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the filmmakers needed a tropical setting, so they primarily filmed in Honolulu, Hawaii, with some additional scenes shot in Atlanta, Georgia. The 2019 sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level, continued filming in Atlanta and Hawaii, and also included locations in New Mexico, Calgary, and the Algodones Dunes in California.
Dwayne Johnson Gets Some New Co-Stars for Jumanji 4
As a huge fan of the Jumanji films, I’m thrilled to hear they’re making a fourth one! It sounds like the whole original crew – Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan – are all coming back to play their amazing avatar characters: Smolder Bravestone, Mouse Finbar, Professor Oberon, and Ruby Roundhouse. Plus, they’ve added two new faces to the cast: Brittany O’Grady, who I loved in The White Lotus, and Burn Gorman, who’s been great in everything, including the new Beetlejuice movie. We don’t know who they’ll be playing yet, but the news is already getting me excited! And the best part? The production is getting a tax break, which is always good news for a movie I’m already anticipating.
Several big films are also receiving tax credits in Los Angeles, including the upcoming sequel to Everything Everywhere All at Once from The Daniels, Netflix’s The Fifth Wheel, The Incredible Heist of Hallelujah Jones produced by Taika Waititi, and Michael Mann’s Heat 2. Development on Heat 2 has been gaining momentum since earlier this month. While no actors are officially cast yet, Leonardo DiCaprio is being considered to play the role of thief Chris Shiherlis – a role originally played by Val Kilmer in the 1995 film. Jerry Bruckheimer and Scott Stuber are producing this new film, which will serve as both a prequel and sequel.
Jumanji 4 is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 11, 2026.
